Hi all first post here so thought id jump straight in.

Need a bit of help regarding a new card to buy. Currently have a 4870x2 2gb just cleaned it out as heatsink was full and got the performence back running crysis at max again ect ect. However I would now like to buy a new card for 2011 after having this one for 18 months (ish).

Had a look around and came to a kind of conclusion that that gtx 570 seems more than adequet for its price as does the 6970 however iv always had ati and found on the whole they are great but get a few bugs now and again specialy with driver updates so was considering getting an Nividia as i hear they are rather stable and as is the 570.

However i have seen the gtx 580 around for 340£ which is around my price range at the top end so possibly if it is really that good then maybe i should invest in that?

Just asking you guys thoughts and opinions on what would be best.

Regards Jeza

Welocme to OCUK.
What games do you play and at what resolution???

Hello
I play pritty demmanding games i.e Armed Assault2 crytek series, others such as cod stalker nfs civ 5, to be honest a broard list, however ArmA2 and crysis being the main ones. the resolution is 1920x1080@60

I am loving my GTX 580's, but if the 570 was out when I purchased my first card that would have been my choice. The 570's offer similar price and performance to AMD's 6970's but they overclock MUCH better and run cool and quiet. The 6970's have more GDDR5 (2GV vs 1.25GB), but what is the point of paying for that when it will not be needed at your resolution?

Bag a 570 and overclock it to to >580 performance.

+1 for 570 at your res.If you wanted to go dual card later then 6950 scales well and can be found for around £185 inc delivery, but looks to be fair way under 570gtx performance (especially when overclocked). Will your power supply cope with a 'powerful card'? might be worth figuring into budget if you need to.:)

Just noticed ArmA2 as one of your fave games, heard that it doesn't like 6950 crossfire, check around could just be new driver(could be me not remembering properly!) but something to check anyway.

@ 55buk: im hoping OC nvidia cards is as simple as ATI overdrive?

@S.james: i would consider ati again but as you say seems gtx's are looking pritty beast. My powersupply is 750w and deals fine with the 4870x2 and the quad ect so im not that worried. Id love to go double cards but with this crappy asrockp43d not enough room, may have to invest in a rampage for that. But saying that 69702gb would be similar ? (i dont know) from whats being said looking like gtx570/80 unless there is a really good case for a 69702gb :/

I would go with a 570 but as you had the 4870x2 it looks like you want max performance so either the 580 or wait for the dual ATI card.

I went from a 4870 in xfire to 6970 and despite the 6950 flashing to 6970 speeds. I’m still glad I brought the 6970 anyway, I’ve noticed the extra frames in DirectX 10 games and having DirectX 11 support is a bonus.

Ah righty, well then back to square one lol, nah I think 570 is looking good, however 580 for 340 is good deal, but its not from OC's so may be a risk customer service wise...

I would be going for Nvidia this time around, there have been a lot of posts on Arma2 forums about ATI problems. If you can stretch to it, GTX 580 would be the mutts nuts. As Jeza says though, getting elsewhere can be a risk - I almost always end up regretting shopping around! :D

Nvidia 580 supplies are a joke. I would go 570, easily clocks to 580 performance.

I can vouch for this. My oc'd 570 performs much the same as my mates Palit 580 @ stock in bc2. Didn't get round to comparing any others, but I'm guessing it'll be a similar story. Of course if you can get a 580 at a good price then go for it mate.

Cheers for all the responses guys much appreciated, this 570 seems to be the way to go, although i can understand the good things being said about 6950 however as josh P stated we've has some issues with arma2 gameplay on ati, so really 570 from OCuk or palit 580 from....else where :/

I was in the same boat as you Jeza when I was looking to upgrade my 4870x2. I was torn between the 570 and the 6970. I read tons of reviews and comments on a lot of different sites and decided on the the 6950 after all that.

I play at the same resolution as you, but, there were a few things that made me change my mind to the cheaper of the three cards. The first was that the 6970 and 6950 were very close in performance at 1920*1080 and I could save a few pounds by getting the 6950. And one of the things that put me off buying the 570 was that it doesn't bitstream HD audio to a receiver.

I must say I am very happy with the 6950, it's much smoother than the 4870x2 and easier on the ears as well :-)

You will be very happy with the 570 GTX if you go that route and it would have been the card I would have went for, just the 6950 was too good to pass up at the time.
