So the autobox on my 530 is dead and I need a new car pronto. What are peoples opinions on the 520d or 520i? Are they slow and hateful or surprisingly good? I certainly don't want an autobox again :(

They don't do a 520i and have not done one for quite some time.

What exactly do you want information on? What is your budget?

You need about £30k for a used F10 520d.

Well I'm more used to driving a 530i as you know, so how would it compare dropping to a 520d? Are they really slow and are they a money pit? I'm looking to chop in my e60 and have 20k to play with, but I have seen some cheaper 520d so was wondering about those first. The reason being is that I am doing 25k miles a year now and £100 a week fuel bills aren't funny.

Thats about as nice as a 520d E60 will ever get - right spec, interior colour, etc etc.

You'll need to drive it though because at the end of the day there is no hiding the fact it's still a 4 cylinder diesel. And they break, so get a warranty.

Don't let anyone tell you "you can't tell it's a diesel". Yes it's pretty good as they go, and nothing like the rattly equivalent VAG 4-pot, but it's still an oil burner and you know it is.

However.... with the CO2 rating it's got it makes a great company car tax wise. And with 225BHP when remapped it's enough grunt for Mr Company Car trundling up the motorway.

However for the private purchaser.... think 6-pot.

bloody happy with my 520d thing, amazing economy, had it chipped and its not remotely sluggish, not going to set the world on fire but 850 miles from a tank and very decent performance have provided me with everything i needed from a motorway muncher.

if fuel costs are a concern I can't see a 535d being the answer :p

Ooops, wrong one. However, 535d... yummy?

I meant to post this one:

E60s are coming down massively in price since the F10 hit the road. I think the curves only going to get steeper over the next 6-12 months.

LCI m-sports for £10k within a year I recon.

I don't think that M Sport LCIs have really come down a great deal, certainly not 'massively'. I'll give you an example - in April last year I bought a 2008 530i M Sport, with about 15,000 miles. It cost me 23k. Now 9 months later and since the launch of the F10 M Sport prices are as follows for similar spec cars (do a search yourself, this was a national search and only 2 cars are similar age/spec to mine):

http://bmw.co.uk/bmwuk/bmwauc/details/0,,1156___ask-8,00.html?ch=_V0JBTkQ3MjBYMENGMzkzNjc=

£22,450 - and it doesn't even have the visibility pack.

http://bmw.co.uk/bmwuk/bmwauc/details/0,,1156___ask-8,00.html?ch=_V0JBTkQ3MjA3MENGMzk1MTk=

£24,990 - with 31,000 miles!

If I go even further there is one other car, but it's an 09 plate. However considering I got my 08 plate nearly a year ago maybe this is an even better comparism?

£27,995.

On another note, how sad is it that nationally there are only 9 530is under 3 years old for sale in the entire BMW AUC network nationally. :o
