I have around £120 to spend on a new GPU.

I have been eying up the GTX 460 and am almost sold on it, but I see there are quite a few different versions of it. What one would be best to go for?

Are there any other cards I should be looking at?

I play @ 1680 x 1050 and the card will be going into a Gigabyte GA-965P-DS3

Cheers!

I won't be able to stretch to the 5850 as I am on quite a tight budget. Looks like both cards are very similar in performance?

I like the look of the GTX 460 but would it be worth it stretching to a 1GB model?

GTX 460 1GB is only really worth it for higher resolutions 1920 x 1200 upwards, and even then the GTX 768MB isn't that bad.

It's definitely not as crippled as some people make out, and it even beats the 5850 in the odd game from reviews I'd read, otherwise it's very slightly behind the GTX 460 1GB which is near enough the same performance as a 5850.

FYI - I have this evening just put a GTX 460 768mb in my PC and ran a few things to see what it can do on 2560x1600 ... (my 5970 is boxed up ready for parcel post tomorrow as I just sold it).

Well, I am impressed to be honest ... ! BC2 plays 60-80 fps on medium settings 0xaa, can use High but it drops into the 30-50 range. It is well smooth and a pleasure to use. Just did Heaven on default settings and got 25fps!!!

The card cost me £97+vat and I sold the included game for £10 so not bad value at all ..

It is clocked @ 900/2100 ...

Just gonna stick another GTX 460 in there ro see what SLI does at this res :D

I have read that the gigabyte card is very quiet James.

Well it looks like I am gonna go for the Gigabyte GeForce GTX 460 OC 768MB

Cheers all :)

Alternatively you could probably pick up something from the MM 2nd hand, but the GTX460 is a great card nevertheless!

I just ordered the above :)

I am coming from a ATI 1800xt by looking at the 460GTX benchmarks I am guessing the difference will be earth shattering! I can't wait!

how does it compare to the 8800GTs?
I'm not sure if I can be arsed to upgrade yet or just wait for the next load to trundle along and pick-up one then

that's what I had read so was thinking of putting it off till they come out and kill the prices

Took delivery of my GTX460 today.

I've been working on problems since I got home at 5! Windows Home Server has been a complete *****, it is funny how the other 3 machines here have no problems with restoring yet I do! I ended up installing a fresh Win7 to the new hard drive which I also purchased a Samsung SpinPoint F3 1TB SATA-II 32MB Cache (Probably the most noisy hard drive I have heard in about 5 years.)

Now it is 1:17am and I am up way later than I should be due to work tomorrow, I installed a fresh install of windows 7 and after installing drivers I just got done testing out Team Fortress 2 - and I am bloody disappointed and I feel like all the hours I put in tonight trying to get the backup to successfully restore were wasted.

TF2 Everything on high 4xAA and I see quite big frame rate drops in the action. My E6300 is only lightly OC'ed at 2.2ghz.. I know I need to OC further and I will do tomorrow (I noticed my CPU was bottoming out at high 90% it definitely is a bottleneck).. infact I need a new board and CPU is the truth. But ah just really disappointed right now! New purchase and time which feels like I have wasted!

Night!
