Many of you may have seen my a thread of mine last week detailing how my previous tv (Samsung LE40M87BD) died a sudden and unexpected death. On the plus side, it gives me an excuse to buy a new telly.

Unfortunately I think 46" is the limit in terms of size as anything bigger would completely dominate my livingroom and look a bit silly. I couldn't care less about 3D and I'm intent on getting a LED television both for looks and for the vibrant colours which they produce - unless someone can put a strong case for otherwise. I've done plenty of research over the last few days and I've limited the search to the following options:

1) Toshiba 46VL758B
2) Sony KDL46EX703 / 713

Would be interested to hear if anyone has had experience with these sets or knows anything about them. Would also be great to hear any suggestions. Budget is c. £1,500 tops. Note that out of principle I'm pretty reluctant to opt for Samsung again given the short life-span of my previous set!

Thanks in advance.

I can't comment on either of the ones you listed, but I thought I should point out that with your budget you could also get one of the non-3D Panasonic plasmas; the V20 series in either the 42" or 50", which would offer better picture quality than the LED edge lit LCDs TVs, although it's important to remember that when striving for 'reference level' you're moving away from 'holy super bright oversaturated picture batman!' which is what you see every time you step in a Richer Sounds or John Lewis. The V20 is only marginally inferior to the VT20, which is often cited as offering the best image since the discontinued Pioneer plasmas.

Use the site DisplayWars to get a feel for image size, you can put your old TV in and compare to a few sizes like so:

I was initially keen on the V20, but I'm slightly put off by the fact that it's a) heavy and aesthetically not as chic vs. LEDs - just my opinion but I'm sure others will disagree; b) widely cited buzzing noise and c) size - will dominate my living room.

Appreciate the links though - will check them out later this evening.

Do you buy a car because it looks pretty and has a nice spoiler?

Figure out where this is heading ;)

I don't think anyone is going to buy a car they think is ugly, actually. I certainly wouldn't and having seen these Panasonics in the flesh, I can see where he's coming from.

Indeed, aesthetics is merely one consideration. The point is that LEDs look great and many perform really well. To add another model into the mix, I quite fancy the LG Infinia 47LE8900. Seems to get excellent reviews.

Just bought a Samsung 46C6540U (Also known as U46C6530) LED TV. Really fantastic T.V. Great pictures. Nice looking thing. Will post pics if you want.

I always use HDTVTest.co.uk, (which I keep plugging lol, but that's just because I think it's impartial and offers a good honest techy review). Only thing is they don't review every single TV out there.

It's one of the factors to consider, just as it is with most things.

I seems to be one of the major factors unfortunately.

PQ just isn't there with these sets when push comes to shove and as soon as you move off from dead centre then cherio. Still pretty pathetic to be frank, this much money and you have to sit bang in or the picture washes out. Plus with movement the temptation to put on silly motion processing settings will be too great, screwed if you do, screwed if you don't. Then don't forget that a number of screens have frankly laughable input lag and in order to fix these you have to compromise with one of the wose picture setting modes.

But then again I always push for people to get the best picture they can, it is a tv after all and not an ornament to sit side on and fap over how thin it is.
