HTC Desire HD (Ace)

Here goes...

This fixed HTC Sense for me:

- Reinstall Locations app
- Remove and re-added your HTC Sense sync account (same user details)
- Sync all
- Untick Phone Finder in Locations and sync all
- Tick the above and sync all again

You don't need root access to improve battery life. Here's a few tips:

- Set screen brightness to auto
- Reduce sync times (four hours for Facebook etc)
- Disable Bluetooth, GPS etc when not needed (obvious)
- The biggest one: disable 3G/wifi when not needed

I've only done those and I easily get 2 full days if I don't have 3G on during work hours.

No idea, sorry! Try turning "Flip for speaker" off and see if that has any effect.

Do NOT use any kind of task killer app. They cause more problems than they solve and drain battery life (remove any task killer app from your phone too). Let Android manage the background processes. As for the lag, try turning USB debugging on (Applications -> Development -> USB Debugging). It's a known issue with the latest OTA update.

PS. I assume you both have all the updates? To check go to About phone -> System software updates.

I forgot to say thanks a lot for the info much appreciated! :D

In fact, while I'm here, I'll ask a couple more things.

a) When I press the off button on the top of the phone to lock it, if I think press it again shortly after the screen is not locked - I just do the normal drag down to unlock, but it doesn't ask for the pattern - why is this?

b) Why does this device come with such crap apps built in? Amazon mp3 etc. I guess the only way to get rid is to root?

You need to change your security settings. To change the duration go to to Settings -> Security -> Lock phone after. You'll want it set to "Immediately".

That's pretty much the state of most phones on the market these days to be honest. If you use a custom launcher like Launcher Pro (which I'd recommend anyway) then they can be hidden from the apps drawer and after that you'll pretty much nigh on forget about them.

As much as bloatware sucks, most can be hidden or removed easily and they probably help bring end user costs down.

Thanks for the reply :D Worked perfectly.

Can you tell me more about Launcher Pro? Why is it so good, etc?

In fact, you seem to be the DHD guru so perhaps you could answer me a couple more things.

I've pretty much got a stock DHD, are there any things which I should do/might want to do to improve it's usability, appearance etc? I've just upgraded from a google G-one, but this phone seems way more customisable yet it's a bit confusing at the moment :p

I entered the world of Android two weeks ago, after years of tiny SE feature phones, so I'm in a similar boat. After perusal of these two threads however I've had loads of ideas and my HD's really starting to look nice, and more importantly, different ;) . I'll be posting up some screenies as soon as I've got the SDK working...

Oh and: with the "post your favourite apps" thread I linked, read it back to front so you find out about the more recent events more quickly and don't waste time wading through months-old posts :)

Ha, I wouldn't go that far! Tetsujin has posted two good threads - the post your mobile desktop one should give you plenty of inspiration. In short Launcher Pro is just an app that replaces the default launcher (launcher being everything you see on your homescreen) and allows you to customise this. Download it and have a play :).

Russ - if one replaces their stock launcher with this Launcher Pro, will the default one's configuration be kept somewhere or lost? Can you manually back it up somehow?

The data's kept. Think of Launchers as apps - when you press your home key, it'll ask you what launcher (or 'app') you want to use and it'll give the option of setting this as your default, which can be changed at a later date. The other launchers are still installed with their settings, they're just not in use.

Why is my phone telling me that I have downloaded a system update but it can't be installed as my battery is too low, yet it is on the charger.

I had the same thing happen to me as well when I downloaded the update, my battery was low and so I connected it up to the mains and even with the mains connected it still refused to update because of the battery being low.

I attempted the update again an hour later when the battery was nearly fully charged and it updated then.

I'm trying to install the SDK etc but the USB Driver Package isn't available through the SDK Manager (it just isn't listed). Everything else is installed correctly but I can't do jack without the driver. Any ideas? Is there somewhere where I can just download the core files (or can someone zip there's up)?

Any USB ADB driver should work, I installed the one from my Galaxy Portal and it worked fine, have a Google around for ADB driver.

I think the trouble is that Java doesn't seem to be installing properly, even though it is. Even tried changing PATH in my Environment Variables. Will see how I do on my home laptop later.

does anyone know if i format the phone DHD will i lose the apps ive paid for or will the googlemarket remember and dl them for me again ?

Install HTCSync for the adb drivers? (might need a computer restart)

2.3 kinda messed up the Java paths on W7 64bit. Use the zip file if it's a fresh install. You'll also need to add android-sdk-windows\platform-tools to the Environment Variables path for ddms etc (location change of adb)

Having some issues with my SDK too Russ, shall not get time to tinker until the weekend though, likely. Hope you get it sorted!

If your using the Gmail app, then you can do it within the app by pressing Menu - Settings - etc.

I'm not sure about the Mail app, but i'd imagine it would be a similar process.

Cool thanks, I realized the problem was that option would only appear if looking at an individual email account. I have my Mail app to show all my email accounts at once which prevents you from seeing that menu option so I had to view each on individually to set the notification sounds to off. Thanks!
