Back to work.. What horrors did you face today?

A run away project, that had its contract signed way too late for the deadline, hardware arrived that was useless for the requirements and parties not knowing what software they should be providing... Fantastic!

The same for me too. Nothing to do.

Oh I had plenty to do, but after 11 or so consectutive days off I just had no motivation and would have preferred to sit at home in front of the fire with a nice alocoholic drink whilst surfing and playing the xbos

Been badly these past few days, must go in tomorrow and sort the wages for the staff. Unfotunetly its a new payroll as we went ltd last month and this is the first pay period. A lot of work to be done in 8 hours to make sure all the staff get paid.

I only had half a day in the office :( then the power got cut for the block of buildings in the area :( I've been off for a month - I was on the verge of suicide!

I'm doing a database conversion for a client, and step one involves copying the data from (I kid you not) 2000 DVD's onto a NAS.

Before actually converting it...

That's exactly 29 days work if I sit at my desk all day every day looking at progress bars.

but is there much to do while it copies?

If not that's 29 days of mine craft and ocuk :p

I went back and had a customer with a Server 2k3 stuck in a boot cycle and 2 faulty harddrives. It wouldn't even go into safemode. Fortunately I managed to boot it up in last know good configuration, unfortunately exchange database now won't mount as it didn't do a clean shutdown. Due to Xmas period they haven't been doing all the backups and some have been failing. Was up till 12am trying to save it lastnight, gotta get in early now to give them the bad news and try to restore from an old backup, I think the earliest will be the 15th.
They sent staff home yesterday due to all this so they are pretty pee'd off already.
And to top it off, we had a staff meeting 1st thing Monday morning to so no one answered phones when they were ringing, ended up faxing us to try and get hold of someone.
They called during the xmas break but say they got a closed message, not an out of hours emergency message.
My colleague came in and went home ill coughing up blood.
Another customer has virus problems so can't work.
Another customer, also a mate of mine has no internet, problems with router, no one in office can help so he keeps dining me direct on mobile pee'd off cus of a £26k deal he's waiting to be e-mailed.
I got a new install due to go in over weekend that's already been backed out twice which I haven't prepared.
And I can't sleep.

Nothing out of the ordinary, i.e. just the boss's son being his usual not very clever, loud, irrational and accusing self.

IT work sounds .... not fun. We're slowly grinding back to 5th gear at work. Have a small job starting on Friday which will last for 12 weeks. After that I'm off on holiday again! Second day back at work and I'm already counting the days.

No heating in the building so had to wear my coat & hat all day.
Couldn't look at X-Ray images on DICOM so ICT came in but they couldn't solve it either.

Nothing horrible or anything relating to being annoyed or unhappy, i basically was trying to get my bearings again.

Came in to 54 new emails (I get hardly any emails at work normally) since 23rd Dec ... 51 of which have been deleted. Nothing in the team mailbox I need to deal with so at the moment just need to wait until my colleague gets in to find out the status on a project we are working on and some temporary licenses for the R&D lab.

Was also told this morning that I am getting a small out of sequence payrise and a promotion (same job, different grade) which is nice :)

The horror I faced was a straight forward one, other people. I swear that a good 80% of the planets population needs to be eradicated, just so many worthless humans out there. Would have been nice to have returned to find people being cheerful and relaxed, but instead it was just another year, another day of people being their usual miserable, petty, self obsessed cretins as always.
