Tell me about f10 and e60 520

bloody happy with my 520d thing, amazing economy, had it chipped and its not remotely sluggish, not going to set the world on fire but 850 miles from a tank and very decent performance have provided me with everything i needed from a motorway muncher.

if fuel costs are a concern I can't see a 535d being the answer :p
New F10 535d is the most frugal of the 6 pots though. 299bhp and 44.8mpg combined is quite tempting, albeit out of the price range of the OP.

It's not the most frugal at all, the 530d has the same combined figure with an off anomaly for the M Sport.

It just had a particularly suited engine map for the pointless EU tests. Additional turbos and 60bhp more does not reduce consumption. It might well not increase it hugely but the 530d is more economical.

Fuel consumption figures from the bmw website (530d / 535d):

Urban in l/100 km
8.0 [7.7] / 7.9
Extra-urban in l/100 km
5.3 [5.2] / 5.1
Combined in l/100 km
6.3 [6.1] / 6.1
CO2 emissions in g/km
166 [160] / 162

It does demonstrate the progress they've made with the auto box being so much more frugal than the manual since the E60.

No help for the OP though as the autobox for the E60 gave him such issues and will not give such decent returns.

Or its just geared to specifically hit specific tests & benchmarks

I was under the impression that Autos will always be thirstier than a manual

Almost certainly. I'm sure it's not just graphics card companies ;)

6 speed manual vs 8 speed auto though. If the box doesn't lose that much energy changing gear then the extra ratios should be more efficient.

If you're looking at an F10 though and have decided to go auto then the 535d is a much more attractive option than it was for the E60 version when you consider how expensive diesel is in 2011. I test drove an E60 535d when I bought the B5 and the Alpina suspension was a massive improvement over the E60 sport equivalent. By all accounts the F10 is also a big step forward over the vanilla E60 springs.

I test drove both 530d manual and 530d auto, I ended up with the auto and on the same run using pretty much the same variables (Cruise Control, 6th gear) the manual returned 43.8 and the auto 42.9.

I was up at Gatwick last Monday for an early flight. Left Dorset at 2:15am and arrived at Gatwick at 3:56am. Average speed was 84mph and mpg in the auto was 41.4mpg. :)

I'm actually steering away from autoboxes now, so that's not a problem. The car is booked in for Thursday, so I will know for definate then. I am swapping the car out though, so am looking in ernest.

I found autotrader to be the best source when I was having a hunt

you decided what you want then?

let me know and ill have a hunt - I have the flu and I'm bored!

£20k seems like a desperately huge amount of money to spend on a 3.5 year old 4 cylinder diesel powered car that was replaced by a new model a year ago :(

f10's are still north of 26k

and if you want a decent spec 30k+

I reckon (dont care about my residuals or bigging up my car) the LCI still has a realistic slot, and looking at the prices on autotrader they are holding their prices pretty well!

I'm open to suggestions, but I would like to keep costs as low as possible if that make sense. I have a few k in the kitty, but they are savings I would rather use taking my family abroad and a deposit for a house.

Anyhoo, I am used to a 530i and the last time I drove a Diesel, it was a X1 and it was truely woeful. The fuel economy was WORSE than my 530 and it slowed down on slight inclines at motorway speeds, so I am keen to avoid something as slow as that (are they 1.8 diesels?)

Every car I have bought has had compromises that I have been able to live with, such as buying an SE spec, business nav instead of professional, so certain things I can live without. What I must have is a manual though. I just don't trust autoboxes made of cheese any more and reading the forums of the car manufacturers that do use the ZF cheesebox such as jag/rr/etc they all suffer the same.

I have been looking mainly at 530s as I still don't know what driving experience I will get out of a 520 (I will have to arrange a test drive at some point) although, I did have thoughts about a 535d. I think I would have to make a lot of compromises though to get a 535 at the right price level.

I would also need to p/x my existing car, I really don't want that millstone around my neck, so if you do see something that gleams out there, please post here and I will send you an internet crate of beer :D
