Which visa to apply for to work in America -

10k I reckon, if you are in miami anyway

oh and short term lets they utterly rape you for them

I had a place in chelsea in NYC that cost $10,000 a month and it was awful! -company paid so not the end of the world but the point remains

Ok maybe not the full 3 months, let's say 1 month for now. (do I still need a vwp for 1 month)?

You need a VW for any time period in the US.

I spent just over 2 weeks in the USA with my girlfriend and we spent about £3k, although £1400 of that was flights and car hire.

Could always do a month or twos volunteering out there. Trail work if you like the wilderness or WWOOFing if you like farms. Would get food and accomodation paid for you when working for them. Technically you do actually need a working visa for that too though however I think they are quite easy to get (if you bother at all)...

EDIT: As for Foxs suggestion on amounts well, I spent less than £1k this summer and stayed there for a month.;) You could quite easily stay for a month on around £1500 if you got a cheap set of flights and stayed in hostels/camped, depends on what your style is.

I think we will go for 2 weeks then stay in a hotel.

I'm leaving my job at the start of February so take it then hopefully, and just get lots of American girls! Who knows, may find the girl of my dreams! ;)

Belloni - it's difficult to say (you will usually be asked how much $ you have on you when you're going in though in order to show you have sufficient funds for your trip). But I'd not want to be going over without probably a minimum of $100+/day (and this is seriously on the low side for Miami/LA if it includes accommodation costs).

I can get around £3000, got some national bonds that need taking out too.

So you are blowing your life savings to go live on the bread line basically?

What happened to NYC at the start of the thread?

p.s. just read the hotel bit, that will set you back £100 a day!!!! plus food ! plus travel !

£3,000 is not going to get you far after your flight.

What did you do, swim the Atlantic and stay in a cardboard box?

Assuming a 400 quid flight where did you manage to find a months accomodation for less than you'd pay to rent a flat for a month in the UK?!

Sorted then. Flights'll be £600ish to either LA or Miami, leaving £2.4k for accommodation/spending.

Sod Miami. Go to Fly to LA, pick up a car and do Vegas -> San Fran -> (down US1) -> San Diego -> LA -> fly home.

Beers are usually $4->$10 in my experience. Tip a buck per beer - means you get good service.

(edit - this was based on a 2 week trip. £2.4k for a month - doable if you stay in motels etc and costs are split by 2 but not my idea of fun).

A buck a beer tip is a bare minimum!

tipping for drinks is pretty much mandatory in the states most of the bar staff dont get a salary just what they get from tips

suppose it depends how much the drinks cost, but I was just pointing out its a note minimum, if you hand over coinage the results arent pretty. a lot of english people almost seem to get offended at the need to perpetually tip for drinks.

My cousin went over legally with a band, and did that thing for a while. Ended up leaving the band and his visa ran out. He's just working illegally now, mainly bar/shop work, with a bit of music. He absolutely loves it and has been doing fine financially. Mind you, when he leaves he won't be able to reenter the country for 10 years...

Actually the flights were £660. :p

I did what I suggested in my previous post. Cost me another £70ish to get to location and back and I spent around £200 on accomodation, food and sightseeing in Boston at the beginning and end of my trip (about 4 nights in all). Rest of the money went on rafting, paintballing and other random things.

Great thing is I could have stayed there for another month or even two and I probably wouldn't have spent more than £1500.
