Hi there, im currently in the market for some gaming headphones, my Stereo Creative fatality have are starting to fall apart after a few years heavy use

I have £50 to spend (can stretch that, but not by much), i need a decent microphone and i kinda would mind 5.1 sound, but the ones on here or out of my price range mostly... what about virtual 5.1? i know for around the 50 quid mark i'm not going to get some spectacular headphones but some decent ones would be nice... thanks in advance

For £50, I'd grab some Goldring DR50's, a Xonar DG sound card and a Speedlink clip on mic. A £50 surround sound headset will be crap in comparison. If you must have a headset, probably the Plantonics GameCom, and a Xonar DG.

Plantronics GameCon are just dire... really uncomfortable for prolonged use, mic is average and while sound quality is there where it matters for gaming its pretty rubbish too - fairly tight mid-range but bass sounds like your in a tunnel and high end unsubstantial.

I'd certainly second the reccomendation to grab a set of Goldring DR50s over ~£50 "gaming" headsets tho.

Tho a little out your budget I do personally highly reccomend the Sennheiser PC163D for gaming - ultra comfortable, great sound quality - once you use a set of headphones like this for gaming you realise how much your missing with cheapy headphones, decent surround reproduction if you choose to use the provided USB dongle and clear mic.

Sennheiser PC163D... i might just be tempted to raid my savings for them, are they the best for around £90 then? or are there any alternatives?

Lol, they are that bad then. :p

Some people must have a headset though, even when recommended they get headphones. Plantronics came to mind as half decent headset for what they cost, seems that isn't the case. I should not be surprised really, most headsets are crap, unless you pay though the nose.

+1

I went for this setup recently (well I went for the NS1000's over the DR150's) after owning a 5.1 headset. The difference in sound quality was huge, and Dolby creates a much more convincing surround set effect than a 5.1 headset does.
