Is Mass Effect 1 worth persevering with ?

Is it one of those Games that you like straight away or is it one of those thats Meh to begin with but then rewards later ?

I bought this the other day and Ive been playing it for around an Hour and a Half and I have to say that I'm finding it a tad boring.

At the moment I'm on a huge space station and have all these places to go yet when I click on the map it just shows the section where I am and not where I should go. So I'm just ambling along which is pretty frustrating.

Also why do you start of with all these guns which you suck at using ? I mean ok I guess you have to level up before your proficient with them but when you get into a fire fight you have 2 guns your selecting which dont work very well. I mean your a super soldier but cant use a shotgun WTF ?:D

I dont want to write the game off totaly as lots of folks rave about it and the Aliens look kinda nice.:D

Does it get better as you progress ?

Don't like it. Never have, never will.
Complex story that masks how repititive the gameplay elements actually are.
Run here, talk to someone, run there, talk to someone else.
Watch A LOT of cutscenes.
Shoot a bit.
Watch ANOTHER LOT of cutscenes.
Talk to some more people. Oh look, a cutscene!
Repeat.
If I want a story, I read a book, I like to play my PC games, not be forced to watch almost endless filmie thingies.
But then again, all a matter of taste.

The way people rave on about the game I thought that I was missing out on something good.

It only cost me a Fiver though. I dont want to give up on it just yet but for the life of me I cant see anything to justify all the FanBoy love that it gets.:D

I've yet to play through it completely but I found the combat a little tedious some of the time. Apart from that I thought it seemed to be a good game, nicely put together, storyline and character interaction etc.

I'd recommend giving it longer.

i normally love these sort of action rpgs but i just couldnt get into it at all. i think i exlpored a few planets and gave up because it just seemed boring

Greatest RPG series of the last decade - definitely worth persevering with.

Folk who don't get this game have no taste.

I wouldnt go that far.

That Citadel spaceship or whatever it is is reminiscent of some god awful shopping precinct from the early 1970's.:p

I want to like this game but its very slow paced and a little boring.

That map bit sucks. Also the tutorial is not very good at all. I find myself in the middle of a fire fight and then a box pops up with instructions.

You get to shagg an Alien at the end I hear so I might stick it out for that, but then I could always have a look on youtube. lol :p

IMO, ME1 and ME2 are both very good RPGs with a well constructed and written storyline. However, story based RPGs are not a genre thats for everyone, after all not everyone can like every game, regardless of how many people say its great. For example, hundreds of thousands...nay , millions of people say that Starcraft is great, but I really dont like it at all, just not my sort of game.

If you dont like it, it doesnt mean you are "missing out" on anything, just means that the game doesnt fit you in the same way it does for other people.

To answer your question, for some people I'd say yes, it gets better and better again, for you though, no , I dont think you'll find it getting any better. Thats no negative about you and no negative about the game, just sometimes the square block doesnt fit into the round hole.

Didnt like it that much tbh, was boring and the second is even worse, i dont get how so many people like the second when its had all its RPG elements taken away and left with a very average shooter. (IMO)

Although the Story and Characters are both good in both games.

I went back to ME1 and finished it after completing ME2. I thought ME1 was a bit meh too until the sequel got me hooked! :)

ME2 massively improved on the gameplay mechanics of 1 (particularly shooting and not having to drive that stupid buggy around) but had the weaker story. The story really gets going once you get hold of the Normandy and get away from the space station. It's worth persevering with for sure, if only for a run in to the second game, which is just epic.

You must hate pretty much every game within the last 5 years then.

Taken away? If anything the RPG elements were even more complex, especially at the end of the game. Plus, we really don't know how the decisions we have made will affect the 3rd game.

Complex how? ME1 had so much more in terms of weapons, armour, powers and if you will, traits. This was stripped down to a 5 option system for ME2 that saw weapons become meaningless and armour only useful if you purchased it as added content. In ME1 I used a team of Shep, Ash and Garrus after careful consideration in regards to what they could offer me as a team unit, Ash was the damage dealer whilst Shep and Garrus used Biotics and Tech to bring down shields etc. In the sequel I found it was often a case of style over substance, there was no real need to use a specific group of characters as against most enemies they were awesome anyway. The only time it became challenging was when I ramped the difficulty up.

By the end of ME1 I was activley searching various planets to see what weapons I could find, much like I used to spend hours in games looking for characters "ultimate weapons". Yes you can change what you wield in ME2 but lets face it, there is no point in having most of the guns there and alternative weapons in the same class are generally little more than a reskin job.

tbh the cut scenes and story quests etc are one of the main reasons I liked Mass Effect, mainly because their pretty well done. But I do agree that Mass Effect needs more interesting combat action, really ramp it up to the next level.. Making the engineer class be able to control a drones etc (kinda like the ones in Frontlines), and making the fighting a lot more fluid and interactive.... oh oh and while were at it Melee combat please...

Yes I'm up to that part now and it seems to be picking up a bit.

It just did my head in a bit running round on that space station trying to find places.

I see that they have blatently ripped off one of those Aliens out of StarWars. The one in Attack of the Clones who owned that Diner but he had 4 arms.:D

I keep trying to like it but just can't get on with it at all. I don't really like having a million guns on my back :(
