Hi all,

I'm looking to treat the GF for her 30th in April(7th) (this year) We have a week off from the 3rd of April to the 10th.

I have never been there before so would i be better off going to travel agent or booking seprate and saving some money if any?

Any advice would be great

Went there on my honeymoon 5 years ago and found it a fantastic place and been wanting to go back ever since.

I booked it all thru Expedia and found it cheaper and pretty darn easy to sort out myself. Admittedly I did get a work colleague who speaks fluent french to ring & confirm with the hotel that the room was booked as I was worried we'd get there and have nowhere to stay!

Flights are cheap enough and it's about a 15-20mins bus journey from De Gaulle airport into central Paris.

Definately recommend all the usual places like The Louvre, Eiffel Tower, etc as it's a must when there.

Enjoy!

I also went there on honeymoon, loved it, been all over the world but Paris is my favourite.

Don't bother with a travel agent, we booked a fancy hotel in Montmartre through Hotels.com and got a taxi from the airport, much cheaper than going through a travel agent.

Couple of tips though, hotel rooms are generally a lot smaller than you'd find in other countries so book the biggest/nicest you can afford.

Also, they love undercooking their steak, if you want it cooked medium, order it well done unless you like blood.

I took my other half over there as a treat a couple of years back, unfortunately it was out of season so I think my experience was somewhat different to everybody else's but what I found was that the place is pretty filthy and the people are rude, keep your wits about you as well because they drive like morons. We're never going back :)

/edit However the Louvre was nice.

I also found this. Certainly not what i was expecting which was unfortunate as I had always wanted to go.

Its always a bit of both, matters where you go etc. But generally its a nice city.
Last time i went i eurostarred it which was all good and straight into the centre which is always helpful.

Not really any other tips, every one will say the same. Only advice i have ever encountered with hotel rooms is, if possible i find its great to book a smoking room. As it usually results in you having a balcony but then again in France every one smokes so i don't know if it will occur that way. Works every time i tried it though

Yeah I went with my ex, its not bad, some places are nice, some places are grubby, bit touristy like any city break really. Just went to the usual sight seeing stuff, Eiffel Tower, The Louve (SP?) Canal trip (although if your planning a canal boat ride, get a decent one, me and the ex-misses ended up on a canal boat full of screaming American kids) not exactly romantic.

Found the french quite rude if anything :\

In the night just went for meals etc, just be careful not to order horse

Now iv done it, its not on my list of "places to rush back to in a hurry" but if you have never been go for it.

not a place I liked but some folks seem to, as others have said, rude people, dirty and very expensive

Sacre Coeur and Versailles prob best bits

Only been the once, won't be going back any time soon if I can help it either.

Found it was just full of ignorant/rude people, everything else I could cope with.

if you dont speak french dont go to paris. That adage doesnt apply to any other french region/city, the parisians react incredibly badly to the language of franglais!

they don't reserve this attitude to paris either, when I was working in the alps last year they descend on mass and bring their crappy attitudes with them.

pretty much what most people think, for the cost there are far better places to visit, women get in there heads that paris is so romantic etc the same way a lot of women get the wrong ideas about how relationships are in real life from watching stupid hollywood movies...

Eurostar is the best way to travel.

Very convenient and stress free.

Disneyland Paris is well worth a day trip, 40 mins on the RER train from the middle of Paris get to (Marne-la-Vallée) station.

I Love France & even stayed in Romainville for a while but as has been said you do need to speak some French if you want to enjoy Paris to it's full. There is an expected ignorance that is swept away once you attempt to speak there language.

Completely agree, but the sights outweigh it....just.

but also on the other hand been to Normandy, it is fantastic and the people were lovely too.

I'm in Lyon at the moment and, as you say, they aren't as bad as in Paris

oh rest of france is lovely, and in fairness I speak decent french, we went to a tiny village on the south of france after skiing called Eus, really expected everyone there to turn Deliverance on us! But they were so nice, spoke great english and appreciated that we spoke french, albeit not fluently :p

the parisian's just care how much of an effort you make they still make you feel crappy and always reply at million miles an hour to further irritate that situation
