The old mans 997 is 3.5 years old now and barring a service, a tyre (blow out) and the extended warranty it's cost nothing more than usual costs of fuel (20-24mpg), a bit of oil and tax and insurance.

It would not, for example, throw a £12k bill or a £5k gearbox bill...

How much is an engine on a 2006 911?

I agree the chances are higher for big bills on an M6, but I wouldn't want to run a 911 of any description without a warranty.
