I owned a mk1 1.6 Focus for two years and barely saw 30mpg average with a mix of short and motorway journeys. I did the usual filter/oil/plug changes but never saw much of an improvement and was just wondering if that's about right as I've heard similar stories from others.

Cheers.

not sure about the mk1, but mk2.5 1.6's should see high 30's from the petrol and my 1.6tdci is averaging 51mpg doing a mix of driving.

Depends on how much of a mix that mix is really. Could be completely normal.

Depends which engine.

With a lot of town driving, my MK2 1.6 VCT will drop as low as 30MPG. That said, on an evening run, I've managed 43MPG on A/B roads over a 40 mile run.

The MK1 was only offered with one 1.6 engine - the 100ps 1.6 Zetec SE unit.

Usually 38 to 42mpg

a fella i know monitors his closely and gets typical mpg over a tank within that range too.

he says that even if he drives like a total gran it wont go much above 45mpg for a journey to-from work which is c.14 miles each way for him

Just make sure it's not an automatic 1.6 and you'll be happy ;)

Nothing but short journeys through towns and villages. 6 mile commute each way to work through two villages and a town, and that journey barely touches any flat ground until I get to work. Then about 12 miles each way to go and see the Mrs. I expected around that MPG. As the yearly total mileage isn't that high it really doesn't bother me; I have a lovely comfortable car.

Ninja edit: I really don't think the snow the other week helped at all.

That's not too bad then, I was hoping that it was from motorway and A road driving then I could finally prove to Morba that they are crap :p

It was Morba's recommendations in other threads about the Mk2 auto Focus that convinced me to give it a whirl (after everyone else called it painfully slow and incredibly crap) and I'm glad I did.

I think the current fuel economy is on-par for a 4 speed torque converter automatic coupled to the old 100hp 1.6 Zetec SE engine.

In the summer I was achieving 430-450 miles from 45l of fuel in my 1.6 Mk1. That's 10 gallons, give or take, so about 43-45mpg? Winter I've been getting a fair bit less, about 380-400 on 45l of fuel and down a bit more during the snow. When me and my friend went on holiday to Wales. I achieved 510 miles on 45l of fuel which I was very impressed with, worked out at 50mpg, from an X reg Focus that isn't a diesel :D
