The suggestion of a reasonable yet compact desktop and a netbook for taking to lectures sounds like the perfect fix to me.

Be warned gaming and high end laptops tend to be VERY heavy! In work we have some DELL XPS and Precision laptops for mobile workstation use and they are painful to carry anywhere and have abysml battery life.

I have a gaming pc built on a budget of around £550 (with a 22" monitor for £100) and a netbook (acer aspire for £200) and its the perfect combination. I can easily do whatever work i need to do on the move and then i have some power at home. A netbook for lectures/library is close to essential if you ask me.

But Trickle is right, you may look a tit if a pc doesnt suit the lecture. there's this moron in my maths lectures that uses a netbook, the idot spends most of his time trying to insert the correct symbols and misses half the lecture.

Nothing ever feels as nice as a quick PC with a nice large screen.

Only alternative would be spend ~£750 on a PC and then go to an airport and buy a netbook if you/your gf NEED something to work on the move.

Yeah, I wouldn't mind doing that but I know I would regret it, I don't have patience for slow systems and always like to buy good quality systems, I would prefer to drop £1000 on something then divide it in half or quarters and have 2 subpar machines, I mean, don't get me wrong it's a great idea, but I personally couldn't handle having a really good PC with i5 /ssd/gtx 560 and then using a slow atom netbook for the rest.

I don't want a gaming laptop per say, I'd be happy with a business class laptop with an average GPU like the GT330/420 or HD 5650. All business class laptops seem to either be really really expensive with rubbish screens thou

Also, does anyone know why laptops seem to have 6-8GB of RAM? Why would I need that on a laptop ?

I understand your reasoning not going for an atom netbook - but I don't think you should discount the whole laptop + desktop plan entirely.

After a quick google I found the 15.6in, i3 equipped ACER ASPIRE 5742-I3 for £379. If your total budget is £1000 (or is it £850, I get confused?) then that leaves a fair wad of cash for a nice desktop system (£621 if your total budget is £1000).

How does this look?

If the GPU is overkill for your uses I'd be happy to redo it with more CPU power (or an SSD if that is preferable).

More CPU power? the X4 phenom II are more than capable.

Just get an ITX system, you know you want to.

i would just get a pc now, then wait for ur student loan and buy a cheap laptop as well.

then u can use the laptop when ur out, and the main pc the rest of the time.

u'll prolly find u really wont use the laptop all that much.

when i went to uni, there were a few ppl in simlar situations.

some we conviced to get a pc, the others that got laptops ended up getting pcs eventually anyways

Hey andi, thanks for the spec. I know the budget is confusing, I keep changing my mind, basically when Im okay with my gf it's £800 when I feel like telling her to gtfo it's £1000. Does that make sense ?

I don't know, the cases look sexy and I could probably just stick it somewhere but I might regret loosing the cooling abilities of a full tower.

I don't wanna use loan, my uni gives me a rebate of about £250 I think if I buy a laptop or a PC but it has to be one of those shop ones where you get monitor, printer and mouse,I'm not gonna buy a crappy pc in a shop when I can build one myself for half the price. lol im sure we all share the same opinion here about rip off world
