Hey guys,

£2800 in the bank and my grandad just offered me a substantial amount of money. Check here

So yea, hopefully around £5,300. However I still need to insure the car and maintain it of course.

Looking for a 2003 Mini Cooper S with no more than 70k mileage.

Here's for starters, anyone know what PX means?

Looks like I can pick up a nice one for £5,000?

PX = part exchange

And FWIW, I still don't think you've got enough for a decent MCS and keep it going.

My mate bought an 04 reg Cooper S last year with that mileage for a similar price and quite a lot has gone wrong since, although to be fair he's running it at 230bhp and as for other running costs the fuel consumption is horrendous for what it is.

Have you actually driven one of these or have you decided you want one no matter what?

An 8 year old performance car can throw up the odd large bill and you have to decide if you really want to commit to it or just buy something cheaper until you can actually enjoy owning a nice Cooper S.

Nope, never driven one so you're right in saying there's a chance that I won't like the drive. I've read nothing but good reviews on their performance though?

I think you actually need to go to a trader, look at a 7 year old one and decide whether or not you like it enough to commit a large chunk of cash. I didn't like the driving position, nor did I like the controls and instrumentation. I wouldn't have one despite enjoying the few hours I spent in a normal Cooper. You also need to work out if you can afford a decent set of tyres and servicing from somewhere other than a dodgy garage.

Sometimes the only way is to get out and drive things

You can sit and stare at reviews and figures for ages, but it can all change when you get in a car that on paper you thought was amazing, and just not enjoy it.

Thanks for the advice guys, so you're saying it is possible to pick up a semi-decent cooper S for around £5,250 but I should test drive the car before making any kind of commitment?

I think you need to familiarise yourself with the costs of running a car like this without any sort of warranty. I suspect with a lot of hard work you can get a decent one for under 6k, however you have to ask yourself, is it worth it at this point of time?

is there absolutley nothing else you fancy but a cooper S?

Im only saying becuase for the ££ you have you are looking at the bottom of the market and they could be rough.

so is it Cooper S or nothing?

You're stretching hard to be in the bottom end of the market and incurring high risks by doing so. Unless you have a decent amount of cash as a precautionary measure then it's a pretty risky purchase and one I doubt people on here will recommend. I can't quote an exact figure but I can assure you my mate spent an awful lot on things that went wrong!

My wife had the S and was lucky to 27mpg even on a normal run. Good fun car but I prefer the Cooper Park Lane she had, was really comfy for such a small car.

Just to keep things consistant (given the other recent threads), have you considered buying a 182, lol :D (tongue firmly in cheek). A Fiesta ST may be an option too :p
