Hi guys,
Your help would be greatly appreciated in anyway.
Just got myself a shiney new 6970 and with it came the 8 pin and 6 pin ports on the GFX cards. Now I am somewhat limited as my PSU (a Corsaid 750w) only has 2 x 8 pin PCI-E ports. One is fine as I have an 8 port to 8 port PCI-E cable.

The issue I have is I only have a remaining 6 pin PCI - E cable. My question is can I plug this 6 pin PCI-E cable into the 6 pin port on the GFX card and connect it to the other 8 pin PCI - E port left on the PSU without damaging it?

Regards

Mate what PSU exactly do you have?

Most of the newer PSU that size will come with both a 6 pin PCi-e connector and a 6+2 pin PCi-e connector. I have a 750 Corsair PSU that was delivered this afternoon sitting right next to me. So should be able to help out yeah.

Thanks for the help guys.

See thats the problem. The PSU I have for almost a year now and don't have the spare cables! All I have is the single 6+2 to 8 pin cable and I by pure luck found a 6 pin to 6 pin cable. So the question was will this spare 6 pin cable work if I plug it in to the 8 pin port on the PSU.

At the moment I seem to have answered my question with a yes :) as Im posting from the machine now. That being said I hope its not oing damage to my new baby

I get it, modular PSU which has two 8 pin ports on it.
gfx card has one 8 pin and one 6 pin port on it.
He has one 8-8 pin cable and one 6-6 cable.

I would have thought the PSU sockets would have just been the 4 pin ones like on my corsair but they muist have changed it.

An 8pin PCI-E connecter (PCI-E 2.0) is jut a 6pin plus two earth wires, so as long at you put it in the right 6 pins then it will work fine. But if the cable is for your PSU then it should fit coorrectly into a correct port?

Spot on 100%
As for the cable and fitting it, It worked I needed to saw off the little clippy bit but it worked. I also got a genuine Corsair 750w PCI-E cable off a guy today in work so Ill go install that tonight.

Thanks to everyone who inputed and helped.

Sawing bits off your PSU??? Are you mad?

Also Im pretty sure (not 100%) there more of a difference than 2 earth wires between the 6 and 8 pin PCI-E connectors, seen as how 6 pins only provide upto 75W and 8 pins provide upto 150W

I find it strange you havent got 2 8pin (PSU end) to 2 6+2 pin (gfx card end) cables as not all gfx use 8 pin connectors, also you should have 4 PCI-E connectors on your PSU no? (Im assuming a 750W Corsair to be SLi certified)

As above, rather than trying to explain it would be much easier if you just tell us the model of your PSU
