What's in Berlin apart from the remains of a big wall?

It's my wife's 30th birthday in March I'm going to book her (and me) a city break for a couple of days. She mentioned before that she'd like to visit Berlin but I've been speaking to a colleague at work who said that unless you are into museums then there's not much to do.

Have any of you lot been and if so then what are the best things to see and do there?

It's a modern city but with a lot of history. What kind of things were you expecting to be able to do?

Dunno really.

She really likes Paris and I think when she's been before with her friends they go on a city bus tour and stop at some bars and cafes throught the day.

I don't imagine she'll want to go clubbing or anything and any time I've done a city break it's been with my mates it's just been a **** up and we've never really done the touristy stuff.

So I think all we need is a nice looking city (doesn't have to be Berlin) with good places to eat and drink.

Tv Tower - great view over the city.
German history museum.
Brandenburg gate.
Go up the Reichstag dome.
ermmmm, pubs?

If you want to go up the Reichstag dome (My dad says it's fantastic) then you should book in advance as they do security checks to clear you for it. I tried turning up on the day in December and couldn't get in without prior booking.

I didn't get a chance to see a great deal of touristy stuff there as I was working, but what I did see was excellent. I am planning to go back very soon.

I can recommend a great place to stay - get an apartment in the Circus Hostel in Mitte. It's hotel standard room with kitchen and balcony for not a lot of money (approximately 85 EUROS a night).

Edit: in fact it looks like the dome of the Reichstag is actually completely closed to visitors for now (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/wor...id-fears-of-imminent-Mumbai-type-attack..html). I'd ring anyway to check - one of the security folk told us it could be viewed by booking ahead...

I also recommend the holocaust museum opposite the us embassy - not easy to walk round (very powerful stuff) but well worth it. brandenburg gate is worth a visit, the wall and checkpoint Charlie are pretty interesting too. I went there on a stag do and had loads of time to kill thanks to flights so we saw a lot of it. oh and Berlin zoo has a (sad) panda!

Went a few years ago and loved it. Lots to see reichstag, kaiser wilhelm church, wall, checkpoint charlie, Sony centre, tower. Saschenhausen and dresden nearby also.

Stein of Paulaner + curryworst is full of win.

We did a few tours with http://www.insidertour.com/ and the guides were fantastic.
