Tonight I found this in my tyre...

Someone was only trying to help you out, thought you needed studded tyres for the winter. :D
 
Ouch! No idea what punctured my tyre (only one in 11 years *touches wood* :p ) but it was beefy enough to rip some of the steel belting out and did this...

I also had a much smaller bolt (M6 at a guess) puncture a Mondeos tyre in front of me on the dual carriage way. When it departed it parked itself in my grille

It might aswell have, there's no way I'm driving around with tyres of different tread depths on the same axel.

Blimey, i have never ever replaced 2 tyres when only one needed replacing!! Been driving over 25 years and never had an issue with replacing only 1 tyre!

The same people saying change both at the same time are probbaly the same people stating they'd never fit Kumhos.
 
I'd of thought common sense would have dictated with how tyres work that if you have to replace one you replace the other! Apparently not. I currently have Kumho's on my car too... :D
 
Both tyres are probably about 5-6mm or so now at a guess, so the worn one would reach critical level a good while before the new one...

You're going to replace a tyre that has 5-6mm on to match a brand new one which will only have 8mm on? I seriously wouldn't bother.

Fair enough if it had 2-3mm on, but i do think replacing a 5-6mm tyre is a bit overkill and a bit of a waste? I'm willing to bet that there would be negleable difference in their wet weather performance, but i do agree with the whole "if you replace one tyre at a time, you're going to forever have tyres that have different tread depths" thing. Not sure what i would do! I think i would probably run the older tyre down to about 2mm, and the new tyre down to about 4mm then replace them both.

But where do you draw the line? If i have a pair of tyres with 7mm on and one of them gets a puncture, should i replace both? Bare in mind, we're not talking about Fiesta's with tyres that cost £40 each - for instance my rear tyres are about £165 each. And it's even worse for people with run flats where rears can easily be £250 for each tyre!

I understand what you are saying and do agree to point. It will always be down to the individual to make the call, in the end only they will know how they drive the car as to whether they should ideally do both or if they have barely lost anything on the other good tyre. :) I maybe should have worded my orignal post a bit better :D
 
That's a big bolt! Only ever had screws in my tyres.

If you've got a full size spare, might be worth considering the amount of tread on that.
