What's in Berlin apart from the remains of a big wall?

I loved Berlin when I went, and I want to go back again because theres places I still want to goto

Theres loads of museums (if you like that) a fair few different tour buses, the underground is easy to use so you can goto places you want to on your own...theres the zoo which is cool as well.

Depends what you want, and depends on where you stay i guess, theres a big shopping place as well i think thats easy to get to.

A friend of mine went to Berlin once, and went on a guided tour. There were some Americans in the group who asked the (German) guide in all seriousness "So, is there a statue of Adolf Hitler around here somewhere?". They pronounced it Ay-dolf and everything.

Some good suggestions guys, thanks.

I had looked at some tourist sites but it's better to get opinions off of people who've actually been to these things. ;)

I was lucky to see the place before the wall came down. We even went to East Berlin as it was then and the contrast between the two halves the city was startling. One full of life the other a grim soulless place. It was a fascinating city then and I suspect that it’s even better now. I must go back one day.

Would have been 'nice' to see the wall before it was completely ripped down...I know parts are still up, and you can 'buy' parts (:p fake no doubt)

Its just interesting, its weird to walk down the street and see random bullet holes in someones house then two blocks down its all pristine :p

We spent a 4-5 days towards the end of a Europe trip in 2007 and it was really good.

Lots of nice places to eat and drink, the public transport was fairly easy.

All the sites and monuments are interesting to visit. The wall, the Bandenburg Gate, Jewish Memorial etc.

There is a museum near the E-W checkpoint which is all about people crossing the wall and the crazy things they would come up with which was quite interesting and different to WW2 stuff.

Going up the tv tower is cool although someone mentioned above you have to book. We just turned up and unfortunately it was at dusk so it was really busy but we got up there no problem.

We also went to the zoo which is cool, otherwise just wondering around and chilling.

One day we did get the train and visit an concentration camp which wasn't too far away, that was very moving and interesting. It was a camp for working rather than killing.

There were 6 of us and we had a great time and I'd certainly go back.

I went in February 2008, so +1s for:

Reichstag - although we went up in the evening so didn't queue for long to get up.
Checkpoint Charlie Musuem is very interesting IMO

The train out to Potsdam isn't far. Jump on the bus and visit Cecilienhof where the Potsdam Conference was held.

Mommsen Eck - the pub of 100 beers. They serve some odd looking stuff...

Visit Pottsdam if you get the chance! I could not believe how little it had changed since the 40's. There are lots of impressive buildings shot to bits by the fighting back then. Its a very odd experience but worth the effort!

No we didn't. The Russians did.

Not really, the ruskies only added rubble on top of the rubble from the combined efforts of Bomber Harris and the USAAF Eigth Airforce;)

Berlin is a supurb place, a really vibrant forward looking city with great museums and amenities. Grab a guide to decide what to see because there really is something for everyone.

I was another of those who were lucky enough to visit Berlin in the early eighties and got to go through Checkpoint Charlie. I was also there when the wall came down which was a stunning experience. Berlin is easlily one of the best Capital cities in Europe.

Me and the wife went a couple of years ago and it was one of our best holidays to date.

Lots of history in and around and lots and lots of great German beer. The public transport system is brilliant (very German) and cheap. Me and the wife never looked at a time table even for the longer journeys to Potsdam and Sachenhausen Concentration Camp.

There is a bar by the canal next to the zoo (at the entrance to the Tiergarten just outside Bahnhof Berlin Zoologischer Garten) that serves great bear and has great views. For some reason we seem to end up there at the end of the day and take the U-Bahn/S-Bahn back to our hotel a little on the drunk side.

We spent a day cycling around Berlin (great way to see the city - very cyclist friendly) and a day cycling/walkiing around the Grünwald. A day in Potsdamn (great place to go) and a day out at Sachenhausen. So after a week we still hadn't seen all of Berlin herself.

The German people were friendly, a lot spoke good English and even the bits that used to be East Germany looked clean & felt safe.

Recommended.
