Probably a silly question!

I have this - ASUS Eee PC 1015PEM Seashell - Atom N550 Dual Core 1.5 GHz - 10.1" TFT. Win 7 starter.

It says actual speed 0.95 GHz. Can this be increased?

Or is this likely to cook the wee beast?

Some of those netbooks can be overclocked.

The atom processor in my Samsung N510 can be overclocked to 1.85Ghz from default 1.66Ghz but to be honest it's not really worth it.

If you are currently running at 0.95Ghz then speedstep is enabled and the processor will default back to it's highest speed when anything cpu intensive is done.

chances are you'll cook the poor thing, any increase you see will chances are be so small you wouldn't see any real world benefits lol

You're missing the point of a netbook I think.

You want the battery to last as long as possible, and to run cool. Overclocking is going to make both worse.

Exactly, when I overclocked mine my battery life on a full charge went from showing about 6.5 hours down to 4.

This was mainly due to the fan always being on trying to get all the hot air out of the poor little thing lol.

my MSI U100 when plugged in has an in-warranty turbo key which overclocks the atom cpu from 1.6 to 2.0ghz.
for people saying about battery life, this function is only on when the netbook is on the plug. Plus when the atom is at 2ghz it can play 720p definition videos.
This comes in handy when I just pack my netbook and a vga cable and plug it into the 42inch samsung my GF has and watch movies off that.

I bought an eeepc 701, ages back. It was sold as having a 900MHz processor, they all shipped at 630MHz as some were overheating. I was not a happy customer, and proceeded to overclock it to it's original 900MHz (possible using a beta bios in this case). However everything I've seen with atom chips in netbooks has been software based, and I'm unwilling to overclock using windows programs.

Netbooks are occasionally plugged in.

my mums msi wind u135 has it the bios under "system performance" tops out at 1.85 or 1.95, cant remmber, could well change the amount with different bios'es maybe?

turbo button seems nonfunction on hers

Most of the MSI Wind U100 clones can be overclocked by flashing them with the latest U100 bios. (Giving an option in the bios to overclock by 8, 15 or 24% iirc) and by pressing the Fn+F10 keys, you can toggle the overclock on the fly. I've got a Medion E1210 with the MSI U100 bios running at 1.98GHz (24% OC), with a 500GB hard drive, 2GB RAM, and dual booting Win 7 Pro and Snow Leopard. It's awesome for traveling; it's so small and light you can just chuck it in a bag with some clothes and off you go!

HP 311C overclocker here, got it to 2.0ghz with no noticeable impact on battery life at all. Certainly noticed the performance hike too.
