I have been reading the forums for the last hour or so trying to decide which monitor to buy.

I need 1080p at least.
I am a fan of FPS and RTS games.
I am tempted by 120hz but not the 3D side of it.
IPS? LED? LCD? Erm... as long as I get fantastic colours, very white contrast, dark blacks and no blur (2ms?) then I'm happy.

My budget is up to £250 I think maybe a little more if must.

Thanks all for any advice.

Sy.

EDIT:

What you guys think of this one?

Samsung P2450H 24"

I'm a regular gamer (mainly fps/Warcraft ) and I had the VG236HE delivered yesterday. It's the best monitor ive used yet. In comparison over the last month I've also used the XL2410T and the EW2420.

As others have said and which I agree with , once you try 120hz you won't want to go back it's just so smooth.

If you're into gaming, and you have a budget of 250, then you need a 27" tn screen. End.

Also considering a 24" 16:9 but can't get over the fact that they are practically the same size as my current 22 inch 16:10 (no wonder they are cheap).

IMO for 250 to spend a 27" seems like best value for money.

but it's still only 1920x1080 or 1920x1200. I haven't had first hand experience of one but I would imagine the low pixel density when sitting so close would annoy me.

It is a bit subjective, like most things to do with monitors. I would say that during gameplay etc. the resolution is neither here nor there but on the desktop 2560 x 1440 is a proper resolution for a 27 incher ;).

Agreed but very hard to find 2560 x 1440 with only 250 to spend :). Personally I am waiting for the 27" Hazro (hoping for a price between 450-550). If that doesn't materialize then it is currently in between the 24" HPZRW or the 28"Hannes. G. or a 120hz.

Why is it so hard to choose a new monitor... :)

So far very impressed with my Samsung P2340H 24". For some reason, connecting with HDMI looks crap. Text is blurry and it's not very crisp, and you have to tweak overscan/underscan oN ATI cards to get rid of this inch margin. So I'm using DVI and the picture is perfect. Much crisper. Any ideas why HDMI connection sucks?

Well I have got the Samsung and I'm not happy.

The red level is poor. It does not look proper red. I just cannot get it right. Also the white level (contrast) is not to great either. It looks more grey than white in game no matter what I do. Thinking about sending it back and getting the Dell instead. Another thing is the backlight. Dark games just look washed out because the backlight is making the screen look sort of greyish not proper black. Would the Dell help out with any of this?

Any of you guys think the Dell would be better in this regard?

If any of you could help me with the Samsung concerning the red level I would be greatful.

How do you have yours setup? I have no idea when it comes to RGB channels.

Thanks all.

So any ideas on the above points chaps? I need to decide if I'm getting rid of the Samsung and getting the Dell by Monday.

Still cant decide.

Thanks again.

EDIT:

Ewaf, what did you put your colours on for gaming as we currently have the same monitor.

The contrast of the U2311H is no better, on the face of it, than the P2450H. The level of backlight bleedthrough does vary between individual units, however, so this is far too general. Another main problem you would experience on the U2311H is what is termed 'IPS Glow' and you can read about that all over these forums and the internet. I would suggest playing around with your P2450H settings a bit more to try to improve things. For a start - lowering the brightness would improve the black depth. You may think things start to look a little dim or washed out when you do this but if you correct the colour depth and contrast you can often compensate for this. Because no two screens are identical you would be best off buying a colorimeter to calibrate it properly. This would achieve a better white point (better colour balance) and better black point. Obviously cost is prohibitive and you really want things to work nicely out of the box. Off the top of my head here are some settings you could try for the P2450H:

Gamma mode 2
R= 68
G= 59
B= 63
Brightness= ~60%
Contrast= ~60%

As I said no individual units are the same so you're going to have to play around yourself. Just remember that the P2450H is generally strongest in green, a little too strong in blue and too weak in red. The default brightness settings are also far too high and the contrast settings should be reduced a little to taste.
