Just been to get my brake pads done today and really could do with some new tyres all round. Worn down to almost legal limit but i must say they have been terrible tyres from the start (firestone TZ200's) awful wet weather traction, poor tread design, utter **** in the snow.

unfortunately i don't have the money for conti's etc etc and can only really afford around £70 per corner fitted. I can get some Maxxis MA-P1 (v rated) for £65 per corner fitted balanced etc etc thats with some discount (10%) so around £260 in total only problem is i've never heard of Maxxis tyres, i did look at them and they are 2 poly/2 steel/1 nylon on tread and sidewall and the tread pattern looked a lot better than my firestones.

Any advice on tyres in general or the maxxis would be great. oh size i need is 205/55/16

I got Kumho KU31's for a bit less than that in 17's, pretty good 'budget performance' tyre or whatever you want to call them.

No idea what else is available in that size but have a look on blackcircles and camskill as they were pretty cheap.

Can you really not afford an extra £50?
I've got Pirelli P7 Cinturatos on my Lolvo and they're pretty good. ~£70 plus fitting.
Or splash out an extra £10 and get some ContiPremiumContacts.

Where are you looking? Check out the sites Peerzy suggested and go from there.
Maxxis are ****, and at that price it sounds like Kwik-Fit.

Camskill have Conti Premium Contacts for £65 per corner. Granted you need to add fitting on top of that, but it shouldn't cost too much and is probably worth it for some decent tyres.

Or if you really want something cheaper, they have Falken FK452s for £50 a corner in that size which should be more than adequate for your needs, if not perhaps a little faster wearing.

do you mean extra £50 per tyre or for all 4

the prices were dealer prices, most the tyre places round me are right cowboys and i know the vaux guys very well and they do a very good job off fitting, balancing etc

The maxxis MA-P1 are classed in Economy Performance and they did get some very good user reviews online but not found any type of professional specs on them

Economy Performance, is that an oxymoron?

He means £50 extra over all. The 'Vaux guys' might do a good job but the pricing sucks.

Mike did the leg work for you. £260 for a set of ContiPremiumContacts plus another £50 for fitting.

i know it's very catch 22 i don't want to pay less for the tyres but have to spend 5 hours watching some **** drill my locking wheel nut out after he got over zelous with his air gun (been there done that)

btw the same maxxis tyres on camskill are only £50 so would be £210 with delivery and £25 fitting fee bringing it to £235 vaux only wanted £260 all in so £25 on main dealer ain't to bad IMO.

if i go the conti route i'd be looking at least £310 with delivery etc etc

can you link me to the tyres as i can't see it in the list?

I know there's a real sense of deja vu here, but please listen to us. It's really not very much money in the grand scheme of things and for £10 a corner you're going from one extreme to the other, which is a bargain.
I could play the child killer card, what with you having a Zafira and all, but I won't ;)

I'd really go for something better. I've never even heard of Maxxis although I don't know too much about tyres.

Remember there are only 4 things keeping your car safely on the road, on a car worth potentially thousands you are looking to save yourself £50 - crazy especially as you shouldn't have to replace them for a good while.

Conti's at that price are brilliant as well, they were stupid price for my car but for £70 a corner you can't say no really.

I ordered off them, ordered to the wrong address at first so phoned them and they phoned the delivery company and got it changed on the day, only a few hours before they were suppose to arrive.

First class.

I think you could easily negotiate fitting for £30 all round if you shop around a bit.

No one should be using an impact on a locking wheel nut, however if you explain they are weak as it was broken last time you can ensure that the fitter will use a breaker bar rather than his impact to slack it off.

If you have requirements, do not be afraid to make them heard!

Why do the linked conti's say BMW fit?

Same here, I've used them many times. Service has always been top notch and delivery fast and reasonably priced.

Given 54% (breakdown) while driving a Vauxhall Zafira 1.9 tdi (205-55-16-H)
Driving on a combination of roads for 18,000 average miles
Tyres are worn to wear bars after 18,000 miles, despite front-rear rotation to spread wear, and regular pressure checks/adjustment etc. Previous experience of Pirelli P6000s gave far higher mileage between tyre replacements.

Despite being a 7 seater our Zafira is mostly (95%) used as a four-seat estate car, so tyre wear rate is not down to regulary use with heavy loads etc

Very disappointed with tyre life, but as they were factory fitted form new I had no prior experience, and no choice.

Will consider replacement with Pirellis or another comparatively priced brand, but unlikely to repalacve with same Continental tyre.

(thats not the sort of thing i want to hear when spending £300 on tyres) from the user reviews online a lot of people are saying they wear very quickly
