The Mk4 Golf era was good. That platform had some decent cars on it.
Solid, generally reliable and good quality materials were used.
The PD units were excellent and very strong, it's just the ancillaries which were the weak points in my experience.
OK, they were about as refined as a Massey Ferguson, but they were economical and (relatively) powerful.
