Which console for 2011??

I wonder if PS3 has finally outsold X360 globally incl Xmas figures - it seemed to be possible given last year's figures (if not should definitely happen sometime in 2011 unless Kinnect creates a massive boom in its own right)

Saying this all sales impetus in the US seems firmly to be with the 360.

The PS3 is firmly cemented in last place now for and it's a pretty similar scene in the UK.

Have a look here at Nov US sales: (stolen from gamasutra).

MS are also in a far better position for a price cut having not had one for longer than the PS3 and as they're into the black for the generation, as opposed to Sony who are still about $8b down (they lost their entire PS2 profits on the PS3).

The PS3 will keep up with the 360 because of Japan and Southern Europe but even here MS are slowly making inroads with Kinect sales in France confirmed at 300k (more than the Wii over xmas) and it's official launch hasn't happened yet as the language support isn't there until later this year.

All in all it should be an interesting year for sales and it's hard to predict.

US market is driven strongly by advertisements. Sony hardly advertise correctly, selling mainly via from word of mouth so to say.

TBH the US see advertisements and are mostly like - ooh must get that..!! They are very driven by what they see on advertisement boards and tv.

MS advertise strongly, its one of their strongest points and a big selling point for the 360 in the US. Europe and Japan will prop up the PS3 however all I'm doing is looking this year for the games I want to play and I will admit PS3 has a very strong lineup of games I'd like to play.

Rule is to always buy a games console or whatever for the content. Reason I got a 360 at one time, purely to play Forza3.

So the question is which would dominate this year. My answer was the console which already equalled its rival in almost every way with a new bonus homebrew scene.

Console A vs Console B with\without Homebrew

So how come homebrew was not a massive deal when Sony removed the otherOS option? When Sony did that you defended them by saying so little people would use it, now you are saying homebrew is suddenly going to be a massive issue for the PS3, when it was not in the past?

Not sure how you work that out :)

OtherOS was limited. If OtherOS was still available and the cell and GPU were unlocked, I believe The same boost in interest would be seen.

As it was OtherOS was crippled and not of much use to many. It was niche(I'm getting fedup of using that word now =P) The PS3 had the capabilites to run linux worse than a budget PC, and so its removal wasnt much of a loss. Now all those people who missed linux in its limited form will now gain it back and more. People who were not interesting in it due to its limited nature may very much be interested in it now! People wanting to have a media center capable of playing all movies( the much wanted MKVs) with an all in one HTPC style machine with bluray drive will be very much interested. Then the naughtier people can also get their kicks from the console also

added in a little more

In worldwide sales the PS3 is only ~5 million behind the 360 now, but it will never catch up in the US which is the biggest market.

The problem is though they've always been the underdog in terms of the devices output power and usually go for what is usually considered underpowered. I think now they've cultivated enough of the market that everyone knows who Nintendo since the DS and the Wii came out so they can put out the more powerful devices.

I wouldn't be surprised if they announced their next console can do 1080p and play blu rays.

Nintendo next home console will not be lacking in horse power, people forget the wii was done based on sales of the gamecube, which lets face it were crap.

Like the above guys said Nintendo are seen as the underdogs these days due to the Wii but it wasnt always like that:

NES: Technically superior to the Atari 2800 and Sega Master system
SNES: Technically superior to the Mega drive and also some of the rubbish 32bit consoles that tried to interrupt the 16bit wars (3DO, CD32, ETC)
N64: Technically superior to the Saturn and PS1 (from a gaming pov, it lacked CD Audio and VCD ability)
Gamecube: Technically superior to the PS2 (from a gaming pov, it couldn't play dvd's) but not the Xbox

I wouldn't be surprised if Nintendo next console had the power to battle Sony/MS directly but on the other hand I wouldn't be surprised if it didn't, after all:

Wii – 75.90 million as of 30 September 2010
Xbox 360 – 50 million as of 6 January 2011
PlayStation 3 – 41.6 million as of 30 September 2011

So the formula does work and is making money, I think its fair to say that Nintendo have "won" this generation of consoles despite taking a different approach to Sony and MS.

That's the key. People talk about Nintendo losing to Sony and MS in terms of technical power, but they didn't even enter that race. They wanted to produce something with innovative controls, low power consumption, small form factor... They did all those things.

You can't lose a race you didn't enter.

Just out of curiosity we see the Wii selling the most consoles but when the hardware is in peoples homes which console do people buy the most games for on average per house hold? I mean the Wii has out sold the 360 and PS3 but nearly everyone that buys a Wii sells its on as they get fed up of it.

I think most people think the Wiis going be great until they've owned one for a few months. That's the way it appears when talking to people in forums and in gaming stores

Yes, isn't it the attach rate which is the best figure to judge a console's success? i.e. how many games per console sold?

top selling games of 2010 would suggest that wii owners buy more games than those who own the ps360.

01. Call Of Duty: Black Ops (Activision)
02. FIFA 11 (EA)
03. Just Dance (Ubisoft)
04. Red Dead Redemption (Take-Two)
05. Wii Fit Plus (Nintendo)
06. Just Dance 2 (Ubisoft)
07. Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood (Ubisoft)
08. Wii Sports Resort (Nintendo)
09. Halo: Reach (Microsoft Game Studios)
10. Battlefield: Bad Company 2 (EA)

biggest market for the X360 - and smallest for the PS3

If anything the ps3 is MORE likely to catch up (x360 has been available a year longer and yet PS3 is still catching up)

Once 3d gaming and other stuff really kicks in , I think Sony have a very good chance of being top (not including wii which of course is wayyy infront)

Gamecube: Technically superior to the PS2 (from a gaming pov, it couldn't play dvd's) but not the Xbox.

The PS2 was better than the xbox in every way (sold more (even at the same stage of life), lasted a lot longer, and the games were superior)

Not sure how carts can ever be technically superior to cd's either

I think Wii owners tend to buy the same 3 or 4 games where as 360/PS3 owners have higher attach rates.

I saw recently that the 360 attach rate in the US is about 9 and MS have said that the UK is the country with the highest.

One thing this thread has done is majorly revived my interest in the 3DS. I started off really wanting one, then I was looking at other ways to burn cash and now this thread has brought me back full circle. Some of the games that have been demonstrated look nothing short of spectacular and while it will no doubt get a helluva lot of shovelware I can see it being an amazing console and as usual the first party games will end up selling masses of these no doubt.

Now... Do I get the blue or the black? :p

I recall hearing that the attach rate order was 360, PS3 and then Wii. The 360 and PS3 were close and the Wii a couple behind. This was a while ago, mind you.

The 3DS is going to wait for a revision for me 3-5 Hrs battery and 3.5 hrs to charge, thats kinda PSP1K bad apart from PSPs charge pretty fast, not even sure what settings are used for those times.

I've still got my original PSP and it still goes strong, for 5-6 hours on the original battery.

these are only stated figures, it will most likely run for an hour or two more, which imo is plenty. also I'd be Nintendo will bring out a beefier battery upgrade (if N don't a 3rd party will).
