Well time to start again i think(track car build)

After thinking long and hard about what i can afford to vehicle wise ive decided to start afresh.

With that in mind ill be putting the 200mph on hold for a long time and just getting a car built(last car ended up bent)

So this build will be to enter Time Attack, its almost like a sprint championship with very relaxed rules about modifications, you can pretty much go bananas, only rules are, no methanol, no slicks, fastest lap wins.

a lot of the things ill be able to transfer from my old shell, the engine/transmission/exhaust, suspension, ecu and seats, everything else is new.

So i bought a shell to start, this is an old shell that was raced in the GT championship at Castle Combe, it has a full FIA/MSA approved shell and is seamwelded.

we then cut out the rear arches and bonded GRP one 60mm wider ones on the rear also the we added 25mm wider GRP ones to the front.

ill be running rota GTR-Ds in 18x10 fronts and 18x12s on the rear

Im currently waiting on the GRP doors, boot and bonnet to arrive, once they are here we will adjust the everything before finally bolting it on to make sure all the shut lines are correct, id get some proper pics for you guys but the site that has them all on is down.

Next up we made a fuel tank in the boot, its a 64litre tank, and we intentionally had it sitting slightly higher up so it gives us the ability to make a massive functional diffuser setup, this should provide a lot of downforce so that we dont need to rely so heavily on the a rear wing which in turn promotes more drag.

you can also see a little bracket we made to hold my dual bosch 044 fuel pumps.

One of the biggest issues on track is fuel surge, the rx7 struggles with this immensly, so much so that at the nurburgring you need to keep the tank above a half when your flat out as you can hit spots where your just sucking air, with this setup the only that would happen is if you on your roof as you can see, the 2 AN10 fittings will be attached at the bottom of the sump for the pumps to pull from.

the aim of the car is just run it at 400bhp and weigh 1000kg for a while but then have the ability to bolt a single turbo on and go for the 700bhp at a later stage

well thats it for the moment as we need to wait for some more stuff to arrive but will give everyone an update when the other GRP parts are bolted on.

Looks full of win already! Gutted about the last projects untimely end but I shall follow with interest. Subscribed :)

well i may still come back to 200mph thing, the good part is, my fuel setup will all be prepared to do 200mph, all ill need to do is make a manifold(£300) wastegate(£100) and turbo(£600) and then buy some racefuel

I look forward to following your progress (again).

Do you do all the work yourself?

everything up to yet ive done myself, the only thing i didnt do was the cage etc in the car, i cant remember who did the cage.

The big issue is im 150miles away from the car so im limited on what i can do, im hoping to go back in april as the car should be in paint by then and i can start transferring all the suspension, rear diff/subframe over

How come it's 150 miles away?

I assume it can't be transported to your home?

Good luck with the new project. Was really hoping you cracked 200mph last time. Don't let us down again! ;)

because i dont have a garage, never have before and all the work on my old car was done on the side of a busy road(nearly lost a foot a couple of times when underneath when a car has drove past a bit close to the car)

cant leave the shell on the side of the road as that would be a nightmare, so getting help from the company ive bought the shell off.

girlfriends coming over tonight so we can look at houses with the intention of moving within the month, ive told her it needs a garage, at that point i can bring it home

You did all the work on the previous RX7 on the road side? You're a more dedicated man than I am :D

I went on a trackday at Cadwell where there was a Time Attack Impreza present, it was fairly quick to say the least!

Will keep my eyes on this one!

it is indeed, do you know jon?

Nah I don't. Recognised it from seeing it in the Special GTs at Combe. I preferred it a few seasons back before he painted it orange though - looked ace in gray .

I think my Dad knows/knew him though.... I remember the two of them hooning it around Combe a few times. Dad in his Westfield would outbrake the Rex, corner faster and then accelerate out better, but the Rex would claw it all back on the straights! Rinse & Repeat at the next corner. Was a proper game of cat and mouse, and in the end both cars would lap pretty much identically (not that one would time at a public day ofcourse ;)).

He'd never commit to how much power it was putting out though, just tell you the stock 270BHP :p. Though IIRC it was running a single turbo and the rest of the paddock all had their guesses on what it was putting out.

Interesting project. I saw some Time Attack cars in anger at Modified Live at Snetterton in October and they were fantastic. Found it more interesting than a lot of standard races I've seen there.

Fuel tank sounds pretty substantial though for Time Attack sessions which are relatively short?

From one ambitious project to another. I like your style :D

Will be keeping an eye on this one as well :)

Also turbotoaster, when you get back could you tell me just how much of a bad idea this might be:

Been giving it some serious thought for the last week . . it seems crazy cheap! Not too worried about rebuilding it, or it being an auto..

doesnt look to bad to be fair.

I wouldnt recommend an auto rx7 as an auto and a rotary dont really go together well.

But for the money it does look in good condition(paint wise)

you would be looking at 1k to convert it over to manual.

Also since its running a single turbo id want the intercooler changing(the standard one is shocking) that would cost about £500 to have done

so that takes you to £4300 for a single turbo manual car that if the paint is as good as the pics look id say is a good price.

depending on your height you will might have to change to a smaller steering wheel but thats only £60 on top.

I wouldnt recommend going on a track day with it though as autos only came with 1 oil cooler compared to type r imports so they will struggle to cool the oil, you can easily rob the bits off one thats been broken though for about £50-100.

id say thats a better option, remove all the nitrous, sell it to make some money back and make sure you get a compression check done on it before buying it, if the numbers come back good then that would be my choice.

You can slow mod it to how you want it, stick a power fc and a map on it and your good to go
