Hi there

So the new chipset is out and im ready to finally purchase some parts.
Now as its been a while since i last built a PC, im wondering what your advise is on a new Sandybridge system. The only part i wont be needing is an optical drive. The rest i want to build from scratch as i dont want to re-use any parts from my old PC

So im mainly going to be using it for Gaming but also your average day to day tasks. I have around 900 pounds to spend (if worth it ill stretch to 1000), anyone want to spec me a nice gaming system? I would not say im to fussed about overclocking, but if prices spare me, id prefer it.:D

Oh its soon to be a very happy new year for me

Oh i forgot to say please...Please :)

Pete.

ok heres my suggestion,

Why is Sandy Bridge chips so much cheaper than the older i5/i7's?

I mean my 920 was £220 when I got it and its clocked stock at 2.66ghz and yet the i5/i7 SandyBridge chips are far cheaper, and the P67 mobos are cheaper than the 1366 mobos :S

it states in the OP that he only wants to use his old dvd drive in this build, so everything else new :p

Thats true - but when someone says to me the want "a new PC" that doesn't automatically mean new monitor, keyboard, speakers, mouse etc. - so I wanted to clarify.

Why is Sandy Bridge chips so much cheaper than the older i5/i7's?

The current LGA 1155 sandy bridge CPUs and motherboards are replacing the mainstream end of intel's range- hence the relatively low price. The LGA 1366 X5/i7 systems are still technically "current tech" as they remain the top-end - however only the super-expensive hex-core i7 980X has the power to challenge these new CPUs using a brand new architecture.

The sandy bridge version that will replace LGA 1366 will arrive in Autumn and will introduce new quad and hex core sandy bridge CPUs to us. Expect these to be expensive.

For that amount youl be wanting an i5 2500k and a p67 board i would suggest the MSI g55 ( can claim back vat with msi atm) Youl want a ATI 6950. Overclocking is apparently very easy with these chips so you should definately give it ago.

CPU: i5 2500k
Mobo: MSI gd55 or the asus pro
RAM: 4gb xms3 1600mhz( if ordering today) other wise 4gb geil 1600mhz
GPU: xfx ATI 6950
HDD: 1tb Samsung spin point f3
Case: Antec 300
PSU: Antec true power 650w
OS: Windows 7 home premium
CPU fan: Something like the titan fenrir or the FRIO

Then with whats left an apropriate screen and keyboard/mouse.

The OP mentioned all new parts and said he only has a DVD drive to reuse (internal part).

When someone says "build from scratch" that doesn't necessarily mean they need all new peripherals - often just a brand new tower and OS. Hence why I asked for clarification, I don't think there is anything wrong with that.
