980x or sandybridge options?

Guys,

Just to check, is it better to stick with an 980x CPU on a triple memory configured motherboard, or upgrade to a sandybridge option such as an i7-2600K and back to paired memory?

Main priority is for rendering graphics, photos (RAW in Lightroom and Photoshop) and video in Premiere. Plus bags of overclocking potential, for speed purposes :D
 
Stick with the 980x for the moment

sandy bridge k processors are better for your needs but the 2011 socket CPU will be better as these will be 6 & 8 core also I think these will be backed by quad DDR 3
 
980X can outperfom this sandy bandy in all aspects D
Apart from power consumption, onboard graphics, and the small matter of price:). You can buy two 2600K's and two mobos for the price of a 980X alone.

But, if you already own a 980X, or even an i7 quad @ 4GHz or above, SB is not going to be worth the an upgrade.
 
Stick with the 980X. If you were starting a new build from scratch I would recommend Sandy Bridge as its much cheaper than the 980X and has great performance!! But in your case there is no point downgrading as such.
 
Just to note, I've not bought either yet... apologies for the confusion guys... I've merely been doing some extensive research on here and reading up online to try and find the best buy.

Can anyone also explain if the triple memory bandwidth be a lot better than the dual?
 
1.32 4.2 ooooo too high mine onliy needs 1.25 for 4.2

4.5 only needs 1.33

Just to reply to your post, I've set the voltage on my Ii7 980X (4.2GHZ) to 1.3000 in bios (1.295 CPUZ), but not adjusted anything else (neither lowered or "highered" and has been running ok so far (2 hours). ran intel burn test ok. do i need to worry about leaving other setting "as they were" ? (Ram and other voltages>, or will just lowering the V-core like i have done be ok? as the system was pre-built by overclockers (ultima series), and they set the Volts to 1.32 (1.33 im bios) - not me. Just wondering if lowering the voltages without lowering other elements could cause issue?

Sorry to highjack your thread Yella, but im in a similar situation. Unfortunatly im with an i5 4ghz(1156) not an i7 and useing it with similar applications as you.

Would anyone but able to advise me as to how much of a gain a sandybridge i7 system could give me, compared to an i5 @4ghz doing video editing/ecoding etc. Thanks :)

It's faster. But you can't use the onboard GPU to really improve the encoding speed assuming you wish to overclock (the motherboards which allow you to OC don't have the GPU fuctions).

It is still faster though, about 15 percent or so for the 2500K. I'm also running my SB at 4.1GHZ with no effort on a retail HSF, I've no doubt it could go to 4.5 when I grab a decent cooler.

Is it worth the upgrade? that's up to you. You can basically say 25 percent faster most likely, (2500 K vs 760) with the overclock and clock for clock factored in. (sometimes a tad more, sometimes a tad less).

If you can offload your current MB and CPU for a decent price (while they're both worth something) it could be a nice mini upgrade. If you can't get good prices (you're eligible for the members market here BTW) then I'd possibly not bother.

its better to set voltage by yourself

1.32 is kinda too high in my opinion for 4.2

set cpu ti 1.25 and then stress with linx if fails rise up by little

memory i prefer to set for 1600 with lower timings mine now is set 6-6-6-18 with 1.6v

for the moment i am using it in autodesk 2011 sometimes then i hurry up also setting it for 4.6 for what are u using it?

All uses really - but gaming/video/pinnacle etc..

It won't prime stable on 1.29, so ive had to up it to 1.30 (exactly in CPUZ, but 1.31 in bios), did one hour 7 mins of prime (4 tests),and was fine. temps were about 67-68 max. Will leave it like that for now. However, the ram is set to "1.66" (don't forget, these are overclockers uk settings not mine), but cant seem to adjust it to 1.65 (for example). If i type it in manually - it just goes back to 1.66 (its red with a cpu warning as well:( )
