Grandma rhymes with 'jar'. That's how I say cinema. Never known the word -ma/jar differently.

Due to my north/south hybridness I seem to switch between the two. On balance I suspect I use the long 'a' version the most as that is the most correct.

A long vowel in English doesn't have to be followed by an 'r'. I have no idea why anyone would think that it does.
