My mate has got himself in a right mess with the police..

Tell him to be a man and sincerely confess to the police - apologise for wasting their time and that he is prepared to do whatever it takes to get past this little incident i.e. community service, help around the station, anything to not get a criminal record.

If done correctly and honestly surely the police may be angry initially but may also see that he is remorseful and give him some slack.

Either way - he needs to take whatever he gets on the chin in order to move on and lessen the momentum of the pendulum of karma.

Why did he try and scam the insurance company anyway? His old phone will most likely get blocked so why did he feel the need to try and get a new phone? Did he have a 3gs and decided he wanted a 4th gen? :/

Your mate is a grade F Clown!

Shows how flawed society really is..... What a mess and over a piece of tech.... What a fool!

Jeeze, there are far easier ways to wrangle a new phone on insurance than reporting a fake crime! For example, you know, just "drop" it perhaps?

Exactly. My phone insurance covers me for loss, accidental damage, and theft.

So if I was the scummy fraudy type, but CBA wasting police time as they could actually be out catching rapists and murderers (or more likely people doing 71MPH), I'd either leave it at a bar (loss) or accidentally chuck it in the river whilst drunk (accidental damage).

But fortunately I'm not the scummy fraudy type.

It'd be funny if someone reported this thread to police and they asked OCUK for OPs details to find out the identity of the mate that way.

<Points at Burnsy :p>

I think this is a Valuable lesson for the OP's friend. In theory it sounds easy to scam a new Phone but in reality its more complicated.

I would put this down to impulsive behavior and the friend should get a slap on the wrist for being stupid.

I think he was sending his old one abroad or something, and think they can work out there, or at least get unlocked and then work on networks there, not exactly sure about stuff like that.

and also, as raised before, why did he not just claim to have dropped it/lost it.

Not sure, I asked him this but he said he couldn't say that he just lost it for some reason I don't know why, I'm sure all mobile phone insurance covers loss and accidental damage.

This what I mean, I really don't think he thought this through properly.

Anyway I'm off out to see if I can find him and catch up on what's happened.

This brings back memories... a little story for your ammusement...

I was working in Totenham Hale (lee valley techno) a few years back and decided to pop to get some grub at the shell station up the road, when walking back I went round and through the park opposite the technopark. As I was walking through a group of three guys tried robbing me at knife point. When I turned round and squared up to one guy as he was trying to put his hands in my pockets another stabbed me in the leg from behind, luckily the guy I was with upped and done legs back to the office to call for the calvery. Anyway after some scuffling and me point blank refusing to give them what they wanted they eventually ran off leaving with nothing. 10 mins later the police turned up as did the ambulance etc. They took my Jeans and the rest of my clothing for what I assume was testing and gave them back smelling and still blood stained later on. (not that I expected them to give them a quick wash or dry clean).

Anyway this has some kind of relevance to the story as what your friend made up actually happened to me. The police, well, they won't do squat even when in my case there was plenty of cctv, they will however give you an incident number number and send you on your way. In my case I was lucky, I went to the hospital, had my leg stitched up and headed back to work. Shortly after the incident (a few months possibly) I was approaced again by a group at which point I decided to change jobs.

So would I make up an elaborate story so I could commit Insurance fraud on an Iphone? probably not but to be honest the police told me that it was pretty much an every day occurance (at least in totenham) so I guess your mate will be handed an incident number and that will be the end of it.

OP, what an amazing story from your quick witted friend, it's no wonder he's entering university soon, such a clever chap. His mother will be very proud when she sees "Johnnies" name in the local paper.

Ok this is lowrider here reporting live from the scene on this rainy monday afternoon on my phone so excuse any typo's

He actually went into the police station this morning and told them the truth and he was let off !!, not even a cuation !

He said that the segeant said it was good of him to admit the truth when he did, he said if it had went on any longer he could have arrested him.

With regards to the phone the sergeant said to ring o2 and tell them it was recovered, man if it was me I'd want to kiss that sergeant.

He owned up to lying?

Did you kiss the officer for giving you a caution?

Since the insurance company have already dealt with the claim if he confesses now that will surely be insurance fraud regardless if he has not touched it etc + wasting police time?

That is a right pickle to be in, hopefully this 'lesson' will stay with him for a long time to come wether he confesses or not.

:/

Edit: I'm sure he'll be ******* relieved right about now, he needs to get that iPhone sent back, and tell him to remember this feeling of relief because if he tries it again its sure to blow up in his face.
