RIP Richard Winters

I recommend to anyone who hasn't seen band of brothers to watch it - it's a brilliant series, but also absolutely brilliantly filmed, and well acted. It's also nice to have the snippets with the real soldiers talking about their experiences. It's a little "Saving Private Ryan"-esque, however well worth it IMO. :) Clearly the book is even more powerful - but at least it'll give you a good start. :)

As a lot of others, I shall now be reaching for the Band of Brothers box set - truely one of the greatest war stories ever told, thanks to that man! RIP Major Winters, what a hero...

RIP but he lived a long life and what he did was legendary and his life should be celebrated

Read the book first then watched the series.

He was a great leader and should have been promoted more, love how he lead the men rather than Sobel who should have but he was a ****

Amazing person. I didn't see this thread and posted a reply in the Music/TV forum.

An absolute legend and inspiration. Hope he found peace. RIP Dick.

I read somewhere that the men of Easy Company still considered Sobel's harsh training to be a massive factor in making them the close, tough soldiers they became.

None of them liked Sobel as a man, but it's obvious they were bonded together because of him

Sobel was useless in combat (as was shown in the various media), however you're right in saying he was an excellent trainer.

Without Sobel, E Company may not have made a significant impact on the war.

I suppose he was but all he did was make them repeat everything, revoke weekend passes for everyone if someone forgot to do something or their boots were not as shiny as they could be etc. that will train men and bond them together as a group.

RIP Major Winters

His stories bear testament to the courage and honour displayed by so many, not just him. His role as part of the Band of Brothers is an inspiration to me and, just as someone said before, I think I'll sit down with the BoB boxset this week.

Someone that really can be called a hero, an amazing leader and a humble man the world a lesser place without him. I wonder if they will finally award him the Medal of Honor, such a shame that it was never awarded due to a technicality on how awards are made.

RIP indeed.

Along with the rest of the veterans who are no longer with us. It makes us all realise actually how lucky we are. A true hero lays to rest with his comrades.
