is Mass Effect 1 worth persevering with ?

I'm glad I'm not the only one who didn't like this game. I thought the combat was a bit crap and the whole thing got boring pretty quickly.

My feelings pretty much. I was enjoying the story & characters but found the actual gameplay boring so never managed to stick with it.

I'm not surprised many do not get along with the original ME.
It was a very niche game that oozed quality, ONLY if it was your thing.

ME2 traded niche for mainstream, and thats when the game hit 'big time'.

ME1 reminds me of KOTOR. Very hard to get into and the first section is very very bland and puts most players off. After that though both games get extremely good! I had problems getting into ME1 also but stuck with it and really ended up enjoying it.

Yeh some truth in that, the game is much better later on

ME1 is a pretty average game as far as the combat goes, the story also tends to plod in parts. ME2 is totally playable and understandable by someone who has never played the first one and is a genuinely brilliant game too. I'd just get 2 and jack the first one in.

If you get into the story of ME1, you'll realise it's better than the one in ME2.

Although that's excluding the cheesy bit right at the very end of ME1.

In ME2, without posting spoilers, the end fight / what you fight against was pretty poor imho.

It nearly ruined it for me personally. Only good thing is how things are left for ME3.

From a gameplay point though, ME2 is more enjoyable...if you ignore the mining bits.

Hmm I might give the 2nd one a go then :)

Would have to agree with this.

i gave up on ME1 at first, after a few hours. left it for a few months, went back to it and thought it was one of the best storylines i've ever had the pleasure of being part of in a game. along with mass effect 2, they are my favorite games of the decade.

cannot wait for the third installment. :)

Really enjoyed the first ME, epic story line.

However for me the important bit is to limit the amount of side missions you do (these are dull as dishwater) and stick to the main storyline. When you get to the second half of the game the missions, set pieces and story all ramp up massively.

Which sets you up nicely for ME2. Although I didn't like every improvement it is a better game. Particularly the side quests and DLC which work much better.

Persevere with it.

Watch A LOT of cutscenes.
Shoot a bit.
Watch ANOTHER LOT of cut-scenes.

You definitely should NOT play CoD:BO then. :p

The complex story is THE BEST THING about this game. It's been a while since I replayed ME1 but I can't remember the cut-scenes being that frequent, and when they did come up they slotted in perfectly.

Story in ME2 slows a bit but that's mainly because it's getting you set up for ME3, which I cannot wait for!

ME1 saves effect ME2, which in turn effects ME3. Therefore it's worth playing ME1 unless you'r happy with the default decisions effecting ME2. Personally I wasn't, I wanted rex alive in 2 & 3, along with the Rachni :).

What is surprising is just how many characters from ME1 appear in 2. I don't mean the main ones, but pretty much everyone you actually interacted with in the first game (and didn't kill) pops up again in the second. Some you can just p-off, others give you simple tasks or decisions that pay. It's going to be interesting in the third one how many people I spared from the first, then the second, will appear in the third.

Just to put in my two cents worth - this was the first RPG I played from start to finish. I didn't do the side missions (my lack of RPG experience showing through). Like what was said before... it is a little dry. But the ending really paid off and the set up for the (much more playable) sequel was worth it.

Just curious if anyone else on here didn't really play RPG games until they played Mass Effect 1 or 2? I cant believe that there is this amazing genre of game that I have been missing out on.

I am looking forward to getting Dragon age and playing through that. How does it compare to ME? Are the action/fighting bits as good?

ME1/2 could probably more be likened to STALKER than to Dragon Age. Don't get me wrong, Dragon Age is good, but its more of a modern tactical RPG, somewhat of a slightly parred down Baldur's Gate [Wish Bioware would get the Forgotten Realms license back tbh, they did some truly great things with it a decade ago, people still play BG today afterall.], and is quite traditional in its approach in that you really need to pause combat and plan frequently, especially if you're playing say a mage. ME tends to be a lot faster, as except for skills, typically in combat you wont need to pause very much etc

Adding my own 2 cents to the original question, yes ME1 is worth persevering with if you like the story, as in terms of RPG and story, it blows the second game out the water. ME2 has better combat, (although can get repetetive/obvious by the end) but in terms of exploration, size of areas, and overall story it pails in comparison to the first game.

If they could bring back more RPG, bigger story and areas, whilst streamlining useless equipment from ME1, and bring combat from the second game, with a reduction in obvious combat setups, then they'd have a truly excellent game. As it stands however, both ME1/2 are better at different things.

I hope ME3 is a refined join of the pair.

I've been playing ME1 after doing the sequel first. At the risk of getting flamed I do prefer ME2, just seems that bit more polished. However there are some fun elements from the first game - like the Mako - which aren't in ME2.

TBH, the main reason for playing the first one through is to understand the back story and restart ME2 with a more developed character. What I don't like in ME1 is that if you choose to be other than a soldier, only the pistol is of any use as a weapon - the shotguns, assault and sniper rifles remain untrained and therefore next to useless. Unfortunately when you start coming up against Rachni and Geth bosses the pistol just isn't man enough to bring them down quickly enough.

I'm probably about 60 - 70% through ME1 now and looking forward to finishing it off so I can get stuck into ME2 again.

Thats actually wrong, different classes have different weapons specialisations, the soldier just to unlock/specialise all of them. I've played through ME1 a few times now with an Infiltrator and fully trained sniper rifle.
