I cant help it, new car again - 3 series

Sat at an indicated 73-74 which is a GPS 70 the 335d is showing over 50mpg from the instant mpg and got around 48 for the journey.

The instant mpg isnt much use for that, mine often sits on over 50mpg on a run with the cruise on, average finishes up under 40.

The trip computer shows 48 odd average for the trip so the instant seems to be pretty good on the 335d

Aye, not got it on the 335.

Am I right in thinking that the e60 had its temp shown around the rev counter? I quite liked that

Not as far as I know, it's just a temporary rev limit so that you don't rev the nuts off it when it's cold. At least on the diesels, anyway..

If he can get 43mpg in situations you get 48mpg it seems to be -1 for the tractor :(

The difference being the overall average is higher. I routinely get over 550 miles from a tank and its not uncommon to see over 600 if I've been using the BMW for work travel.

Pretty sure the 535ds I tried didn't have that and the 335d doesn't, having no temp gauge in a car is bloody stupid.

Seems its just engine temp/rev limit, but not an accurate measure

My 530d had it, but the 335i doesnt

Ok..

I went from Glasgow to Edinburgh under the following conditions:

First 10 miles at 50mph average stuck in traffic until the other side of glasgow with the remaining 40 odd miles at a good steady 70mph give or take the randoms in front. A good 40 to 50% on cruise.

Way back wasnt so good due to timing so it was very much at 40 to 70 behind trucks or traffic. No cruise at all obviously.

AC was on all the time if that makes any difference and obviously both ways had a smallish portion of side roads, car parks etc etc. Driving as normal, so back up to speed quickly but staying generally in 6th.

Brimmed before and after and it used 12.47 litres and I travelled almost bang on 100 miles. Going by my calcs I think thats around 36.5mpg which I think aint bad.

Pretty happy with the economy side of things really, its not actually that far away from what my 530d was getting

Nobody seems to beleive me when I point out how close they are getting now. I was driving the 525i around town last night - 26.5mpg. When I used to drive the 530d around in the same way it barely managed 29mpg.

And diesel costs more. And sounds crap

Certainly on the diesel 5 series the variable rev limit was discontinued with the LCI release.

Helps if you compare two cars of the same generation. Then the difference widens again.

The basic engine is the same - the E60 didn't get the new N57 did it? It's still an M57.

I got 32mpg test driving a 325d on an '08 though that involved some dual carriageway, and have used 120d and 320d on similar around town work and saw circa 30mpg.

It also makes sense from an ownership perspective to compare a car with the one it replaced.
