T-Mobile reducing data caps from 3GB per month to 500MB.

If you read the contract it stipulates that the phone is supplied outside of the contract, that's why you don't have to send it back when you upgrade or cancel early. Knowing Three, the agent either swindled you out of a phone or they have a nice bit hidden in their contract.

Blimey, I can't see them giving you a £400 handset and letting you keep it if you've only been in contract for a handful of months.
If however that is the case then Merry Xmas 2011 for all those that get to keep it

I only finished arguing with vodafone about this in Nov, it took months to get a result from them, now I have to go through it all again! 500mb is NOT enough for phones these days.
If they'd reduced it to 1gb I wouldn't have minded so much, but effectively reducing it to 15% of what it was is ridiculous.

I feel like writing an app which downloads random bits of data all day long until this new limit kicks in, try and make things as difficult for t-mobile as possible!

It's a lot more common than you'd think - phones are subsidised but this doesn't have an impact in a contract for a mobile. This has nothing to do with Orange, at a guess the management of the joint venture decided it considering how the show runs now (although it's interesting on a personal note that you think Orange brought t-mob :) ). At a big guess the throttle will be packet inspection & basic HTTP rule / email although I don't have further details.

I didn't mention anything about Orange

No text here either, it will be clause 2.11.2 and 7.2.32 quoting to T-Mobile when I get it though. I expect them to do what Orange did and do a grand reversal as a mass exodus would cost them millions.

Fair play to those people who might get to cancel their contracts, but a question for people.

Do you really use over 500Mb worth of data in a month? The vast majority of my data usage is on the wi-fi at home.

Probably not, however I signed this contract as it offered 1GB of data otherwise I'd have stuck with Orange. Last month I used 250MB on the data network usage whilst connected to wifi most of the time.

Big companies cant just effectively change the terms and conditions one month and expect there customers to bend over and take it. I would presume a lot of people switched to T-Mobile for there more generous data allowances also.

'Oh I haven't used 500 of my included minutes for the past two months, please accept this as notice that I'm reducing my payment by £5 a month because of this' - in a contract this would be unacceptable for a customer to do this, so what makes a network any better?

Yes, sometimes, especially when I have a busy month of travelling (Google Maps). Even if I was only using 300-400MB a month then I'd still complain as I pick contracts that exceed my usage so I can be safe in the knowledge that I will *never* go over my limits. And who are they to say that my data usage won't increase over the next 20 months anyway.

Hi All,

Earlier we began notifying our contract customers of changes to their Fair Usage Policies (FUPs) relating to data usage on mobile phones. In line with the industry, T-Mobile will be reducing its FUP for data downloading to 500MB/month from 1st February 2011.

These restrictions will affect both new and existing customers, and will ensure an improved quality of service for all of our mobile internet users. As the average mobile internet customer uses only 200MB of data each month, this will only affect a small minority of users, whom we have begun notifying.

T-Mobile will not charge its customers additional rates for exceeding these data limits, and those who do will still be able to access important services such as email and website browsing, but will have file downloading restricted. Customers who have a need for higher volumes of data will be encouraged to take up a separate mobile broadband plan. We are confident that these changes will result in a better experience for all of our customers who use internet on their phone.

Seems they're only notifying those that are currently over. How does that make any sense? Also sounds like it affects all plans (W+W, Android, etc).

However they spin it, its still a change in the T's & C's - they will try everything to get out of it ie 'its a free add-on' or 'you only use 200MB so it is not of detriment to you...'

Still, it is of detriment to the customer as its a change in service offering a lower level of service for the same price per month. Saying they are just texting customers who are over the limit? I have no idea how they can get away with it, as in not notifying all customers affected by this change - shocking.

Well i had no text or email from T-Mobile about the change to 500mb, which i currently get 3gb, people with Android mobiles will use 500mb in no time.

Some months I've easily gone over 1gb of data use, just by downloading a few apps & using chat software & watching youtube video's.

I think if i can im going to get out of my contract, using breach of the T&C and having no notice whatsoever about the change.

If i can im just going back to a basic mobile on PAYG.

That's VERY sneaky of them! Surely it affects everyone, even the people who are using less, as they might've chosen T-Mobile because of the odd month when they'll need to use more! The more I found out about this fiasco the dodgier their behaviour seems!

Hope someone with a lot of spare time and money sues them.

don't see how they can saay its not a core feature, its part of the contract that will incur me costs in excess of my current bill to Maintane after the change
