visited the purple shirt place tonight,

Took my mum into one of these shops at xmas to get her a new laptop (i would never let her go alone).

Wasnt to bad except when it came to trying to push the norton package they were selling.

Cant remember all the things the sales person said but. the most stupid one was "Free anti virus invalidates the warranty"

The most stupid one was "Free anti virus invalidates the warranty"

I would have asked him to show me exactly where in the warranty documentation it states that, then I would ask for his Manager.

It's those kind of blatant lies which get me the most.

and i'm still feeling the urge to punch someone.

went in with the specific intention of buying a cheap laptop for the mother in laws birthday

no problem first piece of advent crap we found, dual core intel chip 3 gig ram and win7 that'll do for facebook.

so accosted a sales person and explained i wish to purchase said laptop.

so you'll be wanting a back up disk with that for only £10?
erm no

but you really need to get a back up disc for it and its only £10
erm no if it carks it i'll reinstall win7 or whatever i have to hand ta

but that will invalidate your warranty.

erm no

i'm sorry but i think you'll find its illegal to install any copy of windows other than what is provided by the manufacturer

erm no it isnt

you cant install any other copy of windows as the laptops bios will be locked and you cant change the operating system withour flashing the bios first

at this point i started to loose the rag a tad told said employee to shove his warranty his backup discs, his 3 for 1 anti virus and his laptop up his backside, walked out and drove to the other purple shirt place on the other side of town

same laptop in stock found a sales monkey and explained i wanted 1 laptops no backup discs no warranty just said laptop for the pricely sum of £336 with nothing else attached thankyou very much

how are you paying?

card

oh right would you be interested in the extended warranty at £xx per month which covers accidental damage?

no

but its only £xx per month and it could save you a fortune in case of any accidents or mishaps

at this point i felt a strange zen like state take over my body and i swear if the wife hadnt intervened i would have inserted a bleeding laptop up his back passage sideways

i ended up walking away leaving the wife to deal with him and sat in the car wondering how many ways i could kill someone using only a usb cable?

jesus, having made a couple of purchases at the said purple shirt place last year i had no issues of being lied to or being pressured into paying for warranties i dont want or "backup discs" funnily enough there is a backup partition on the lappy we bought so why on earth would i want to pay a tenner for a dvd with the same? it just seems that they have decided that every person walking in the door will be brow beaten into paying for something they dont want

If you get that annnoyed then you better let the wife phone SKY to cancel. I'm totally calm but even I got slightly annoyed after 30 minutes of trying to cancel.

Deffinately I spent half an hour trying to get the account closed as I moved to Virgin. In the end I told the woman I have cancelled the direct debit and if they want any money from me to take me to court. Not heard a thing from them in nearly 3 years...

My local indian food shop has merged with purple shirt shop so now if I want to buy a fridge I have to go to celestial body shop.

I once raged at the purple shirt staff.

"But what will you do if the machine develops a problem? Windows 7 is more complex than XP"
...
"Fix it myself?"
...
"?"
...
"If I can't fix it, then I don't hold much help for you :p"

I prefer to preempt them, with nonsense of my own if you annoy them enough they eventually give up on their script to sell you stuff and just try to get you out of the store as quickly as possible

About the same time they became too cheap to stick a Windows install DVD into the box, meaning that now it has stupid restore partitions

Restore partitions are easier to use and less problematic for the knuckle draggers. That saves a lot on tech support calls.

The last few times I've went they've been strangely pleasant:confused:.
Needed a PSU as mine had croaked, found an OCZ one and wasn't sure about the cable length. They were more than helpful in opening up the box for me to have a look and never at any point did they try and push anything on me. Guess I got lucky?:p

As an ex-epip i may be able to shed some light on this.

PC World don't actually make that much money on the actual PC/Laptop - they get most of their profit from the add-ons like Norton, Tech Guy Support, Backup Discs etc.. which is why they try and sell it to you.

When i worked there, i was completely honest with them and told them that they don't need any of other things as AV you can get free and it's very easy to create a backup disc using W7/Vista/XP; plus the Tech Guys are a bunch of idiots.

The fact that you were buying a PSU shows you have more knowledge than the average user :p

I think even the most dim sales person would know that you dont want a 3 year extended warranty on a component ;)

DVD's are uber cheap when stamped, I bet they do not supply them to make it harder to restore, meaning you are more likley to throw it out and buy another (well non IT people)

It's not that the tech guys are a bunch of muppets, though a fair few of them are, it is that they are given a thankless job, that pays pathetically, are bundled into a horrible grey building, treated like cattle by management, and honestly, if they weren't bound by stupid rules about how to do things, could fix a lot of issues in half the time. Unfortunatly, they are given a very short space of time, to establish the problem, which invariably is "it broke, come fix it", or "little johnny installed some game and now it doesnt work, come fix it". There are a great many people that work for the tech guys, that genuinely know what they are doing (and a good few that frequent these very boards), but working their saps their will to live and they become mindless drones..

I don't understand why people get so annoyed over stuff like this. I've been in the same situation a few times and i just shrug it off, be polite to the salesperson and make my purchase. It's the customers that i see acting like big babies i want to punch in shops, not the assistants

Even being polite they can still be a pain in the arse.

I've worked in retail and been in the position of having to sell things but I tried to sell it honestly and with my opinion wether it be good or bad.

I bought my insurance over the phone and the guy went through every add on they had and how it was only a pint a month for X,Y or Z. I said politely I'd rather have the pint with a laugh about it....he still kept pushing each one.

In the end I said sorry mate I know it's your job but I'm not the ideal sale and I just want my car insured. He then said something along the lines of "Ok Whatever" which I was a bit annoyed about.

Just leave it or add a bit of a twist to the sales pitch rather than the same spiel over and over!
