Generic 'New used car' thread :D

Prices for 2005 cars range from £4,000 for a bog standard LX in fair condition all the way up to £6,000 Zetec Climates and Titaniums from dealers taking the mick. £5,000 would be a reasonable price but you have taken a lot of your bargaining power away. I wouldn't get carried away with the mileage, it isn't a guaranteed failsafe when buying a car.

It's january & dealers are gagging for sales, I'd have gone down & started bidding at 4k cash, He starts at 5 & you meet in the middle, Cash talks on the day though not as a dipper prior to viewing. You have to be cheeky when it comes to starting bids.
Same as others as well there's no need to travel 200 miles to find a decent Focus.

So what is a good price then?!

I wouldn't worry too much.

If you pay £5500 you're paying the going rate rather than getting anything cheaper than it should be.

You could have haggled maybe £500 off, which could have been spent on better things. But ultimately it's not the end of the world. Not like you're going to buy it on dealer finance at 40 % APR over 3 years for an 1.6LX thats already several £k over budget or something.

This is an example of another dealer selling a similar thing

I'd possibly try and get your deposit back, and next time look closer home so you can just turn up and haggle.

Strange isn't it that its £5744, I rang up and said I had seen it for £5244, they took an hour to ring me back and say they would take that price, but that would be the price I paid....

Not sure if I actually got the money off :/

Any chance you pass by there MrLOL :P

VAT went up and they've added a bit on - that's probably the reason for it going up.

thats the usual Evans Halshaw trick of advertising it at different places then if somebody rings up asking about it, selling it them at the lower price and letting them think they've got a bargain.

I'd move on and try and get your deposit back. Its going to be hard work even getting that under 5k i reckon.

Find one thats higher mileage. Doesnt need to be 20k miles to be reliable.

Just thought it would hold its value longer, I'm not going to be doing huge miles in it, but will probably have it for 2-3 years.

I thought I was being paranoid about it being some sort of trick, but seems I wasn't far off :s

Still in two minds about it, still seems like a good price when you look around. (for that mileage/spec)

The travel wasn't a big consideration, I thought it was likely the car would be good and I could drive it back so distance didn't really matter. Just stood out as a low mileage example and the price was the same as some other private cars with twice the mileage.

Maybe instead of haggling the price (even if I could) I might just ask for some more warranty.

I'm confused, why do you like that car so much? Did you want a 2.0 engine? They are quite rare in focus'

And just so you know, that warranty won't be like the original manufactures warranty - you will need to check what it covers - probably not very much.

I think this will kick off something bigger than I intended, but I drove the car and liked it, looked at what else could be had for the same price and thought the Focus was the best in the range.

The titanium is a good spec and the 2.0 HE engine is a bit more than I have now (1.8 306). Seems like a good reliable all rounder, like I said, its not going to set the world on fire, but its something that ticks all the boxes i'm after.

I ride a motorbike as well, mainly for fun and I'd rather add my commuting mileage to the car. (50 miles a day, all round trip) For motorway driving I found the 306 a little stretched and noisey, this should be a little less stressed hopefully.
