Being a passenger

Oh god i'm awful as a passenger.

When i'm in the car with the girlfriend I drive 9 times out of 10 as otherwise I sit there and correct her all the time, stamp the imaginary brake etc. and she gets angry with me.

I spent so many years being driven around with my Mum but the other week she took us to the airport and I was like a bag of nerves when we got there. She brakes too late for me, went on the A30 and drove at about 50mph which made me seethe, and then at the airport pulled up in a NO PARKING space to let us out. :o

As soon as a driver turns to look at me in the passenger seat i want to punch them in the face.
Why do they have to look at you when they talk.

Indeed. But also their lack of awareness of what's going on around them - but that's speaking as a biker too. :)

Being that close to the kerb feels intrinsically wrong. Also my father brakes quite a lot later than I will. So no, I don't like being a passenger.

As for riding with my brother; the less said the better.

I'm a terrible passenger - unless I'm drunk, then I just sleep. I worry far too much, except with my mum driving - then I just shout at her for being a MLM.

Strangely being a passenger round the Nurburgring in a Swift with my mate driving on his first ever lap, in an unfamiliar car, whose only driving experience was a year in a 1.2 clio before starting uni - that was OK! I managed to get him mashing the passenger brake pedal into the firewall a few times when I was driving though :D

Hi,

I'm just wondering about this, how many of us drivers aren't particularly keen on being a passenger?

Reason I'm wondering is, I'm heading to the cinema with a friend tonight, and they offered to drive - I countered with saying that I'd prefer to drive, almost automatically. My girlfriend doesn't drive, so I rarely have the opportunity to be a passenger.

Anyone else like this, or am I just a control freak? :p

I like it as a change. You see so much more when you're the passenger.

I think they hate me being a passenger as much as I do. 10mins of continual back seat driving is normally enough for them to offer to let me drive. Not saying my driving is any better but at lest I cant moan at myself.

Im ok for short hops but I find myself being overly vigilant on anything other than round the shops checking blindspots (obviously copping an eyeful of the back seat instead as im a passenger lol).

Being driven at speed is very diffrent though, I hate and I realy mean hate being driven even remotly quickly by anyone else it just puts me on edge, "Spirited" driving is even worse, it just seems to be a mess of barely in control sawing at the steering wheel, heavy brake and accelerator inputs and a complete disregard for phyisics/vehicle dynamics . The only exception to this is a friend of mine who drives a 350bhp mk1 MX5 an he is probably the best driver I know although that is probably due to the fact his car must constantly be trying to kill him :)

I didn't used to be a particularly fussy passenger, but recently I've really not enjoyed being a passenger when my dad is driving.
Either his driving has become worse, or because I'm driving when I'm in a car 99% of the time, I just forgot how close he drives to parked cars, kerbs etc. (He knows the width of the car, or so I'm led to believe..)
That, and he's becoming more aggressive with age, but drives slower and slower..

I don't mind my mum's driving at all. Never had any problems with friends' driving standards either.

I'm not too bad as a passenger in a car, put me in the passenger seat of a truck and if I'm not happy, I'll make him pull over & take over!

I have done this more than once!

I'm not too bad but sometimes I reach for the brake pedal or warn people of potential hazards :p

I'm not too bad and quite often enjoy it because I get to see everything around me but on occasions I just want to push them of the driver’s door and carry on myself.
