Internet fears

the internet is a dangerous and scary place, just like the real world. and just like you have to protect them in the real world you have to protect them online too.

Education and giving them an understanding of what you expect of them is your only option.

My parents tried to block sites that were "bad" but the problem was they were never as perverted as a 14 year old so never even considered most of the stuff i used to find.

Give them a resticted user account so that they cannot damage the computer (Virtually).
Restricing internet access or spying on this is just sad tbh. If my parents ever had I would not be impressed and probably loose some trust in them.

Plus looking back at the type of kids at school whos parents spyed on/limited their internet are the wierd kids.

Up to you at the end of the day, I wouldnt reccommend it.

My 6 year old plays Portal, apart from the levels with the "yucky floor" and the occasional bit of TF2, my 9 year old looks up the prices of the presents we buy her (my ex has trained her well.......)

I got the net around 2000/2001 I think, no parental controls, I was around 12 and got on fine. I managed to not get groomed. :p

plus I'm generally decent at figuring out who is a fake or not!

My son is 21, I know for a fact he's been going on porn for years as I've seen it on screen when walking past and he doesn't know I'm there. Do I care? No. When I was his age I was exactly the same, except there was no computers or internet, only Mayfair and Penthouse. It's only natural that kids will want to go on these websites.

Meh, don't worry about that whole parenting thing. Just get bongo'd on booze and drugs and then post here asking for advice once it inevitably goes wrong.

You know, like you did the last four times times on this forum.

I wished I had the internet when I was really young. By 4 I was able to turn the computer on, type "win" to get into windows and then I was just allowed to roam free on windows and do as I liked. Mostly ended up playing Jazz Jackrabbit, but I still ended up teaching my parents how to use the word processor. This was with Windows 3.1

I was however, too scared to click cut because I thought it would cut me.

When I got the internet, my parents tried to regulate me but it never worked. I just looked at whatever I wanted, rotton.com, porn anything like that. Never did me no harm. Get your young kid access to /b/, that should do it. He might even find some porn for kids the same age as him LOL.
