Generic 'New used car' thread :D

If its the car you want and you are happy to travel then fair play but don't treat the car any different to a car with three times the mileage and don't be scared to walk away if you are not 100% satisfied with it.

Just thought it would hold its value longer, I'm not going to be doing huge miles in it, but will probably have it for 2-3 years.
Unfortunately the value bonus of having a low mileage car is reduced in absolute £ and percentage terms as times goes on, so you pay the premium for having a lower mileage car - you'll never get it back when you come to sell it (apart from in exceptional circumstances).

And just so you know, that warranty won't be like the original manufactures warranty - you will need to check what it covers - probably not very much.

Just a thought, but do you know if 2nd hands cars are covered under the Sale of Goods Act? ie, if something (non consumable) kills itself (eg, gearbox detonates, injectors pack up, etc) inside the 6 month window, it's their problem anyway, so the OP wouldn't need to rely on the dealers warranty system?

(obviously there are few parts on a car that aren't consumables, door fell off, ahh the hinges have worn, they're consumable items on this car sir...)

Seems a bit steep to me, with those miles it'll be short journeys so exhaust system will probably be quite corroded internally, as well as belts etc coming up to renewal time on age, not mileage.

If you like the car, go for it, but this mileage has to be low!1!11!!1111one thing that's going on at the moment is rather misguided.

That is FAR less simple than it looks and although technically you are right it will often involve legal action in order to get this right.

Returning to the generic new used car thread, I do quite like the Focus, and the 2.0 Titanium is a beefy spec. There was one almost exactly as you describe for ~£5.7k at the local Halshaws and I did consider going to look at it. Cars here do tend to be a bit more expensive than they are down south for some reason. I decided against this one though.

I should probably mention though that I've been thinking of loads of different cars for almost two years now :(

Phew, I thought you'd been avoiding the car at the same price in the same place...I've learnt my lesson, never going to make a thread in motors again, will just lurk at the back.

Motors has a great proportion of people who know exactly what they're talking about, or who have worked in the 'trade' for a good while.

Refusing to post in probably one of the best sources for car knowledge and opinions in the UK because you disagree? Not very wise... :)

I've had some very sound advice from this lot. :D

There should be a ban for everyone who says 200 miles to buy a good car is a "fair distance away". It's not like you're going to Japan to buy a prime example now is it? :p

Not sure if I would want to travel that far for a car that doesn't sound great - entirely depends on condition but I would be wary of being a car with that mileage at that age - that's an awful lot of short journeys (assuming that's what it's been used for).

irony-lol

Wait are you telling us you put down a deposit on a 5.5 year old Focus without even looking at it?!

Why did you do that  Surely you've compromised your negotiating position as well, how are you meant to haggle now?
How much room to haggle is there likely to be on a well specced, low mileage, popular family hatchback in a good colour? A token amount I would have thought? OP certainly wouldn't be shaving hundreds off a car that will sell so easily.

why so ?

We've all been completely honest with you, and tried to provide you with good advice.

We've not tried to persuade you into buying a Turbocharged Hot Hatch or Buying a RWD coupe or anything you dont want.

We've just been giving you advice on purchasing what you want - a ford focus.

Its merely the case that the advice is one that you dont want to hear - that you're paying over the odds and not getting yourself a good deal.

The truth as they say, hurts.

knowing evans halshaw and the fact that car is up at £5,750, almost none on his price of £5,250.

Thats why we're advising him to look at another 2.0 Ford Focus Titanium, without the premium for the uber low mileage, which is no guarantee to reliability. Plenty of people do, dealers take advantage of this and charge more. But on a 5 year old car, you wont get that premium back selling it privately or trading it in 3 years down the line. It'll be just another 8 year old ford worth a few £k
