I'd like to take my girlfriend to Ireland at the start of February as she's always said she'd love to go and I'm half Irish and have never been so I guess I should head to the motherland for a gander.

Now I'm quite shocked with myself because I'm a very well travelled person, but it turns out I know jack squat about Ireland and what to do there.

So...what would be the best place(s) to go if we planned to stay there for say 3 days?

I'd like to get out and see the countryside, the type of place they are in P.S. I love you (don't hate me)...and also experience some fine Guinness while I'm there in a pub with a good atmosphere.

Please let me know your thoughts and experiences!

Everything is expensive, even more so if you go to Dublin. I think I paid as much as €6 for a pint in Dublin and that was about the going rate! I had a pub lunch and it was €15 for a typical pub burger!

If you want a decent Guinness you might as well go to the factory and do the tour (you get a free Guinness at the end in the skybar).

You're taking your GF so this wont matter but Ireland is pretty much full of stunners!

Hi mate,

Where exactly do you want to go and how long?

Wicklow is the next county to Dublin and has stunning scenery. They have a trip by bus that will take you to all the nice spots like Glendalough etc.

Wexford has great beaches (Curracloe was used for Saving Private Ryan) and some lovely scenery aswell. Some great pubs in the towns aswell.

If you get down to Kerry - Killarney national park is spectacular.

The Burren in Clare is good to see. Bunratty castle on the Shannon is lovely.

Cork city is great and so is Kilkenny nice castle in Kilkenny and good night life..

Dublin is expensive but you can do the Guinness brewery trip in St James Gate.

Also go to the Jameson Distillery trip near smithfield. They have a trip down the liffey in a WW2 Duck, Viking splash tours.

Some nice museums and free.

Wow, very comprehensive!
I'm just heading out as we speak, but I'll definitely be back on here later to pick your brains about a few of those suggestions...Wicklow might be a good option?

Also keep the suggestions coming guys - if Dublin is expensive and nothing too special then I'm not worried about going there.

Perhaps a more rural area with attractions / sights / tours which has a bigger city / town close by for a spot of dinner and drinks one evening?

If you want rural, the west coast is nice and rugged, especially around Galway/Donegal.

Wherever you go, bring wellies.
