Hi Guys

At work we have a 09 Ford Focus 1.6 with 39000 miles on the clock.

It has an issue with the gearbox so we sent it into Allen Ford – Swindon who told us it requires replacement .... but because we are 1500 miles over the 12,000 service interval they are saying they won’t cover it under warranty and therefore we need to foot the bill which is going to be roughly around £2000 - £2500.

This is quite frankly hilarious, how a service on the engine affects the gearbox i do not know ;) ... They are saying they could have spotted the potential problem if it had come in at 37500 for its service.

What is the best route to go down with this, talk to ford customer care or simply take it to another Ford garage ? I know garages love to wriggle out of things like this and Ok hands up it should have been serviced but i dont belive for a minute that we should foot the bill on a car so new.

Many Thanks

Go to Ford Customer care, but I wouldn't be surprised if they give you the same response if you cannot be bothered to keep a year old car serviced properly.

You could have course just get it serviced at another Ford dealer, and then contact customer care. A 1500mile late service looks a lot better than "you've missed the last service".

Isn't there some wiggle room in the service interval regarding it invalidating warranty? I can't remember exactly but I thought you were allowed to go a certain amount over either in months or miles.

Its usually 'service every x miles or y years, whichever comes first'. Go over either and bingo no warranty.

Trying to get it serviced it another dealer will likely not work.

If you walk away from the dealer they will almost certainly inform ford so that you can't go to another dealer and try and con them.

Your only hope is to appeal to ford customer services and see if they are willing to overrule the dealer as a gesture of good will

good luck.

As the service is due anyway, I'd say it would be better to at least try this - there is literally nothing to lose. Service car, call customer services and say 'I was only 1500 miles late'.

of course theres something to loose.

If you go to another dealer and ask them to service and act all surprised at the fault they find Ford are going to tear you a new one - because it looks like exactly what you're trying to do - con them.

At least if you be honest and up front and go to ford direct you've got a chance.

Trying to con Ford is bad idea imo.Its just going to make things worse and make you look dishonest.

I'm not suggesting he cons Ford, or act surprised at the Gearbox issue, just that he gets the car serviced before he goes any further.

The judgement call is going to go up to ford regardless.

At the dealer level its black or white, serviced on time or not. If they want to overstep the lines and approve something as a gesture of good will that normally wouldnt, they will have to make a case with ford.

Which you can do yourself by ringing ford customer services direct.

I don't agree that any good can come of taking it to another dealer and trying them instead

Cheers for the responses ...

As far as I'm concerned its daylight robbery .. sure its skipped by 1500 miles but that is easily done when its someones company car especially when they rack those kind of miles up in a week or two. If the engine had a failure then that would be a slightly different story but the gearbox :p

Does anyone know what service requires the gearbox oil to be changed ?

Will let you know how i get on

So the problem would have been spotted if the car would have had a service at the right time, but if that was the case it would have cost them a new gearbox anyway, what the hell does it matter the car drove 1500 miles more

At the very least try to get the cost split

Select the correct variant of Focus here: http://www.etis.ford.com/fordservice/serviceScheduleForm.do

It'll give you comprehensive information and it's from Ford.

Where would you draw the line for being out of warranty? 2k over, 5k, 20k more?

Ford had to draw the line somewhere and that is probably very clearly stated in the warranty book and agreement, if someone didn't bother sticking to that its there own fault.

Mate were talking about a gearbox which i suspect isnt included in any services up untill now ... Then we get onto a gearbox failing when its only done 39000 miles when its on an 09 plate.

To be honest im not really bothered, just trying to help someone out in my company :)
