T-Mobile reducing data caps from 3GB per month to 500MB.

This is the problem with a lot of people, they probably didn't care a jot about the tariff changing but saw it as an easy way out of paying for something. It's this kind of attitude that has led to these ridiculous fair usage policies in the first place - people taking the ****.

How are they even slightly related? In one case people are trying to get a free handset, in the second case people are using a service that they have paid for!

Wonder if this means if I upgrade now i'll get 3gb but if I wait for a few months I'll get 500mb??

Glad they have seen sense, seems they stood to lose a fair amount of customers if this had gone through.

As soon as you've sent your letter you have began the termination process. Providing you had the right to cancel when you did, you should be fine.

No doubt this change of stance by T-mobile will make it a bit more complicated but I'm sure if you follow it through, you'll still be within your right to cancel.

I do wonder whether that's the case, given that T-Mobile are now not actually changing plans for existing customers. I suppose it's a letter-of-the-law/spirit-of-the-law thing: if you read the Ofcom regulations extremely literally, they never say "You cannot cancel without penalty if the phone company chooses not to make these changes before they come into effect", but equally they are meant to protect customers from unacceptable changes, and the lack of any actual changes makes it hard to argue that you have a right to cancel for free under the regulations.

Will be interested to see how it turns out, but I wouldn't like to be defending cancelling the contract under Ofcom 9.3 now that the changes aren't taking place for existing customers.

Awwww crap, i was really looking forward to terminating my contract :(

i KNEW i should have done it before i had lunch!

I disagree. There is now no grounds for termination.

I agree with you here Fox.

i don't see why t-mobile have any obligation to allow the termination of contracts after they've removed the detriment to customers just because you've got a letter in the post.

UPDATED:

I had rang up T-Mobile as half an hour ago, the T-Mobile head office had now changing that the 500MB data allowance is for for those who upgrading new phone or new plan and for new customers only.

All of us on the existing customers will remain 1GB or 3GB data allowance until the end of their contract. The websites will be updated shortly on T-Mobile.

Changes to Mobile Internet fair use policies

T-Mobile Statement:

“On Monday 10 January 2011 we announced that, in line with the rest of the industry, T-Mobile would be reducing its Fair Use Policy for data usage to 500MB a month for all mobile phone customers. Following a further review of our policy, these changes will now be introduced from 1 February, to new and upgrading customers only - not existing customers.

There will be no change to the data packages for existing customers for the duration of their contract and we apologise for any confusion caused. The revision to the Fair Use Policy is designed to ensure an improved quality of service for all mobile internet users."

Lysa Hardy, VP, T-Mobile UK

Information on new data policy:

From 1 February 2011 new and upgrading customers will be given a monthly 500MB data allowance. There will be no charge for those customers exceeding that limit, and those who do will still be able to access important services such as email and web browsing, however file downloading and streaming services will be restricted. Customers will then have the option to increase their monthly Fair Use Policy to 1GB a month by purchasing a Mobile Broadband Booster. This will ensure an improved quality of service for all of our mobile internet users.

About time they saw sense. My 18-month contract is up around October so I would have been calling them in the next day or two to cancel had they not have woken up.

Can't say I'll necessarily be with any of the major networks after October the way things are looking. I don't regularly go over 500MB (I've been downloading a lot the last two days on purpose so that I could claim the new limit was clearly to my detriment) but prefer the peace of mind.
