MacBook Pro external display whilst closed lid

It does cook the machine, regardless what Apple's official word on it is, I've heard about screens cracking and shutdowns after prolonged used because the CPU got too hot.

Looking at it, the only real air ventilation is down by the screen hinge...

I'm sure easy use of it and in a well ventilated place it would be fine, otherwise Apple wouldn't put something on their website about doing it.

I have mine setup constantly with the lid down running Plex under my 50" TV. No problems so far.

I want to do this as well, but with TWO monitors. I can do this with my work provided PC so want to replicate with a Mac.

Can't you just lift the lid an inch or two to get some air flow around it?

You can only do that with the Mac Pro or if you get one of those Matrox boxes, and even then I don't now how well it would work with displayport.

On a relevant side note, if I wanted to run a 2560x1600 screen from my display port via HDMi and/or DVI, what adapter do I need? :/

My fully loaded 8Gb i7/240Gb SSD & 1Tb SATA hard drive unit probably spends 80% of it's life running in clamshell mode connected to 24" cinema screens.

It's thrashed with lots of virtual machines constantly too.... Never have any issues with heat. You may hear the fans ramp up now and again, but no more than I would running it open IMO.
