Your questions on Sweden answered!

The female aspect seems to be well covered in Sweden... can you get a good curry there as well? Do they have much of a taste for spicy food?

Not particularly, there are a couple of places here in the city I live in, but they are substandard to say the least. Possibly part of the reason my ma bought me a curry cooking book for Xmas.

(Madhur Jaffrey, Curry Easy)

I would give it 5*'s. It's a truly awesome book.

Semi-serious question - do you have any jobs going? :p

More serious question, what are the prospects for someone who's Swedish isn't brilliant - i.e. if you were looking for someone, would you instantly dismiss an applicant who wasn't fluent? (this is more for a general idea of what the market may be like rather than specifically your company, but obviously you can only answer on your own experience ;))

I don't have any jobs going, I had 12 but they all went pretty quick.

For my experience, I absolutely woud not rule someone out because they cannot speak the language, and there is more than likely a law against that. But my companys language is English, even though its a Swedish company, as they hire in a lot of outside the country talent.

Interesting read. Glad you're enjoying it out there, generally the standard of living seems to be excellent. I wonder if there is perhaps a case of selective highlighting going on though- you have a job you enjoy, it's a change of scenery and culture from what you're used to etc.

Sometimes maybe it's a case that a place is merely "different" rather than quantifiably better. Having said that, I would like to visit.

I am in no way ruling that out :) This was more of a informational thread though... The fact that (IMHO) Sweden is awesome just seems to have come through a lot. ;)

Is that Barret from FFVII in your sig?

Is it true that the government changed the constitution so that you no longer have to be swedish to hold sensitive or high ranking positions within the government and didn't consult the people?

Is it true that sweden is now the rape capital of europe?

Do you notice much anti-Semitism?

Do you feel like the government is turning against the Swedish people?

I actually researched this a little bit more for you mr Spoon.

The wikipedia statistics surely paint a bleak picture of Sweden as the rape capital of Europe, but there are some very important caveats, as statistics have a nature of being manipulated towards one persons ends.

So, Sweden does not have the same definition of rape that the rest of the EU does. Something like kissing a woman when she does not want to be kissed could be counted as rape. In the rest of the EU, rape is a violent act. In Sweden, consentual sex with no violence can technically be reported as rape in many circumstances too.

The fact that these very elaborate over reaching types of behaviour are included under the header of rape is what is making the statistics skewed in this manner. Not that Sweden is without rape, I'm not saying that, just that the title of rape is given to so many things, that it is bound to have a largening effect on the statistics. What the actual statistics are when comparing like for like crimes, I could not say, but to say that Sweden is the rape capital of Europe is most certainly false.

If the government did change the constitution to allow people of non-swedish origin to hold sensitive or high positions within the Swedish government, then it is not really common knowledge. Hardly anyone I talked to (many of whom were learned men with beards and pipes and such) had heard about it, and the one person who had thought it was in reference to the Sami people (basically the Native Indians of America, or Aborigionals of Australia, but in Sweden) finally getting recognition for being able to hold office. Long overdue really, and not something the populace need to be consulted on IMHO.

I appreciate your time looking in to that for me, many thanks.

I was just querying about it because I am intrigued by a video I watched by Pat Condell (see youtube thread) relating to the questions I asked. I have however kept an open mind on the matter as one should with anything in the media!

Through all this thread yesterday I completely forgot about being offered a 3 month contract working in stockholm monday-friday, all expenses paid, flown out monday morning and back friday afternoon. Pretty decent pay as well.

I said no.

Why did I say no?!?!

Silly! :p

I definately struck it lucky, not only did my company book me a return ticket for my interview + a few days to check out the city, they also paid for my flight over when i started and to ship all of my possessions over too, (1 van load).

As mentioned above, i will never be returning to live in the uk!

to cover the curry point, there are Indian \ Chinese \thai restaurants and whilst the food may be of a better quality than in the uk, they can be a bit bland if you are used to a proper curry!

And to return to the "girls" point, my bus this morning, like every morning, was full to the brim with absolutly beautiful women and even though its pretty damn freezing over here at the moment, they are still wearing little skirts and boots.

I love this place.

Tell us why!

I literally started looking for jobs in my industry (CG/VFX) after reading this thread, seems there's not allot on the go unfortunately. A fair few games studios though it seems, do they have decent tax breaks out there for that industry or something?

Hmmm...

Well that's a let down. They look much like any clientel at a UK nightclub after being airbrushed to hell.:(

I like!

Yeah, but nothing that special, just looks like normal dressed up girls out at a club. :p

Having said that "girls on the street" photos would probably make things look a lot more different!

This is where u see the real difference in eastern europe and scandinavia, the "average" is just way higher and they dont tend to be fat until middle age/older.
