Hey guys,

I'm getting my driving license soonish, have paid for a crash course in Blackpool as I seem to suck at driving :D

However I won't be getting a car right away, but I will still require transport to and from work. My dad is being so kind (or crazy!) as to get me on his insurance so that I can commute until I get my own.

However up to now, most quotes using Moneysupermarket.com have been around £9,000 to £13,000!!

Can anyone recommend a company who may give a more lenient quote for a named, new driver? I'm new to all this and kinda struggling so any help would be greatly appreciated :)

Oh - and my dad has been driving for around 15 years, and has 12 years no claims I believe. Thanks all

It depends on what car your dad drives, as well. My dad's current insurance is ~£300 a year (24 years license, 17 years no claims), but if I was to be added as a named driver, it shoots up to £7k.
I'm 20, with 2 years no claims, and the car in question is a 2000 BMW 528i, so it doesn't really surprise me.

Sounds as if you're trying to start a brand new policy?
Are you sure you're adding yourself to your fathers current insurance?

Hi mate,

Yes - made that mistake at first! First we created a new policy for myself and i think the quote was £13-14,000 - we then created a new policy just for my dad which came to about a £1000, but once I'd added myself as a named driver it shot up to around £9000 :(

He drives a Jaguar XJ, the 2010 portfolio. It's a diesel, at 3.5 litre.

Any suggestions?

Yup - shot up to silly amounts once I'd added myself as a named driver to his policy :( Think I'm buggered...

Um what did you expect on a car like that!

Cheaper off getting a small car for yourself and starting your own policy!

Don't be tempted to front doing this though...

Its a new XJ... of course you are not going to get sensible ins.

Tell your dad to downgrade his car to a 1999 Vauxhall Corsa, then add yourself as a named driver, it'll be much cheaper than the quotes you are getting atm.

My suggestion, if daddy can afford a bran new Jag he can afford an older 2nd hand car for you!

Also I don't see how a crash course will help with bad driving? Surely normal lessons and you driving with parents in the car would be better?
eg instead of your dad driving to the shops he gets you to drive instead (obviously with him in the car)

It all takes time, I remember I was constantly stalling at first. Ending up going round quiet back streets with my mum doing the main drive of to and from.

Try putting yourself as policy holder some companies will hike the price because your the higher risk than the policy holder your putting in. Add on mum and dad on a admiral quote and see how it goes

Thanks for the replies. Yeh, guess it's all down to his car, damn him!

I can't do lessons with my parents unfortunately as I don't think I would benefit from driving his jag as it's an automatic, and my mum can't drive :(.

SGWillis -thanks, i'll try that

Cheers guys

Hi mate - At first i was doing one hour a week and i really wasn't benefiting from it, he let me drive on my own once down a street and my arms were locked as I lacked confidence. I have a little more now and i do think the crash course will help with around 4/5 hour tuition per day.
