Is this desperate?

Wait im confused. :S They wont let YOU spend YOUR money that YOU EARN ?

Your parents are quite how can i put it... idiots.

buy it anyway and tell them to shove it. if they dont like it tell them you will move.

What a nightmare for you mate....my wife doesn't know anything I buy for my pc even though the side is Perspex...if it's any consolation if you were my kid I'd let you buy it...you obviously love it which should be encouraged as stated previous rather you were playing pc than smoking crack!!!

if it's any consolation if you were my kid I'd let you buy it...

This gets me thinking...when our kids eventually grow up and want gaming components, we will probably be poring over the Internet with them making the best choice (kind of like a at-home 'spec me' thread) :D

While a nice thought, it doesn't help our OP here. Fact is at the end of the day, one should be able to have a reasonable discussion with parents to come to a mutual agreement, or better still, to put a point across. OP, what kind of upgrade are you looking to make i.e. what is your current spec and what is the CPU you want to move to?

Haha sounds very familiar this situation. Fortunately since having been at uni its a lot easier.

Parents still got hold of my bank statements so I got my housemate to buy parts for me through his account, and through a series (of small not noticeable) transfers and cash payments repaid him over a period of a couple of weeks. Parents never knew, they just thought I'd been getting lashed a lot :D

Also deliver to friends house, build at friend's house. As you're 18/nearly 18 I assume you drive so then one day when you're parents are out for just an hour or so, ninja to your friends. Load pc in car. Ninja back and place pc in "normal location". All is good :)

You definately need to nip this on in the bud mate other wise as has been stated your never going to be able to upgrade when you get the old ball and chain.

If the wife knew how much I spent last year on upgrades I'd be joinging the john-wayne bobbit club.

I would suggest going out a couple of nights and in a row and getting totally lashed come home yak in the garden leave a half eaten kebab in the living room then when they start in on you just say you have nothing better to spend you money on!

If you're old enough to work and earn some money, start paying rent. Even if it is a token amount. Then you have every right to spend YOUR money on whatever the hell YOU want!

If you expected your parents to buy it I would see their point to a degree. However the whole point of having a job is to earn money to live on, if your lucky enough to have disposable income then do what you want with it. Personally I join the group of tell your parents you are old enough to make your own decisions, your not spending that much money on parts and then tell them to stick it.

Also phone your bank cancel your bank statements and get online banking - never will they know again what money is in your account.

You could unseat the ram slightly, when you try and boot up it should beep like mad, fingers crossed they dont try and get someone to repair it, get a new one, seat the ram, sell it.

If you want to finish it off so no one can repair it the best is remove all cpu protection and run with the cpu fan disconnected, only issue is if its something like a dell i don't believe you can remove the protection. So poss remove the heatsink, cpu, snap a pin on the CPU, put back together.

I had to sneak my ati 5850 past my girlfriend, egg in my face is that it was DOA. Typical.

take one 20/24 pin atx connector take your pick of one red and one yellow wire and swap them around, press the power button and say goodbye to your current mobo.

On a side note you do need to man up, if you can't sneak upgrades in past parents you'll never have upgrades when you find yourself a lady

Oh so true! lol! :D:p

I have tried a discussion twice now, pointed out where my PC is failing and its limits, explaining to them that I can't edit vids or Photoshop on it (something they prefer me doing to gaming, and something they think is quite productive at times). I even tried a crack about how I can't open multiple tabs on the internet - something I need to do for geography research in order to try and avoid bias. I also tried saying how prices will go up and I won't be able to get it this cheap again (lo-and-behold ram prices have gone up, and look, VAT is at 20%).

Their response was along the lines of your PC does all that you need it for (namely school work on e-mail) and save your money for Uni (a wise point, but I'll still need to get a full loan anyway).

My current spec is:
P4 @ 3.2 (suspect the virtual core has died, as its apparent clock speed is 0GHz).
Asus P4C 800E-Deluxe mobo.
1GB <competitor name> value ram.
Sapphire HD3850 512mb.
CM Elite 330.
CM eXtreme Power (or similar) 480W psu.

Looking to move to:
Althon II X3 445
MSI 880GM-E41 (or a second hand better spec board if I can find one for similar price)
4GB XMS3 PC-12800
Either a GTX460 (or comparable 2nd hand card)

Earlier this month I could have got this for ~ £260 now its closer to £280.

Cookeh mate, I know exactly where your coming from. When I was in my teens my dad ruled the household like he was Joseph Stalin. He was massively opressive stuck in the 1940's and wanted everything done his way. Also I was **** scared of him.

However you have to stand up to your parents at some point otherwise your going to end up getting pushed around and walked over for the rest of your life. Take control of your own life, your 18, you have your own job. If talking to them doesn't work then take action and buy yourself whatever you want.

Don't kill your current pc just to justify you need a new one, it is desperate and ridiculous. At 18 mate you dont have to justify your actions to anyone at all. Buy your pc, and get things like your bank statements back. They are none of your parents buisness and they are actually breaking the law.

Best of luck to yer.

As these two have clearly pointed out, you really need to start sneaking stuff...

Oh, Alex switch to Online banking! So much easier them not tracking your cash!

I find it odd that seeing your argument about Photoshop etc.. your parents won't listen to reason...It seems quite clear that they know very little about computers, so you should be able to swap most parts out without them knowing. Best bet is as above, to get them ordered to a friends house. Makes life a lot easier...

I can in some ways understand your dilemna though... If I wanted to upgrade parts in my computer (and pay for it myself) I end up having an argument with my parents about it, yet if it broke they'd happily pay for a new one... It's a flawed system, you just have to learn a way around it.

If you want to trick them, best bet is just to unplug the PSU from the Mobo or something, unless your parents know something about computers then this should give the desired effect without actually killing anything.

What I'd probably do though, short of showing them just how awful it is, (take them into your room, show them you can't open more than one tab etc...) is just sneak stuff in. It's the easiest way tbh....

Also be happy that next year you'll be at Uni, and it's much easier to get stuff delivered etc... there...

I came home at xmas with an R.A.T.7 mouse, and parents disapproved, but by that point there was little they could do/ I managed to spin some stuff about comfort :)

Anyway best of luck with this, I know your issue!

I don't think sneaking is an option...if you were going to you wouldn't have needed us lot to point it out I'm sure you have already thought about it...only you know what the answer is cooks.....personally I definatley think you need a visit from MR.T

its your money dude, its bad enough having to pay tax on what you earn let alone be told how to spend it.

Its not like you are please star out fully. Thanks. VS it up against the wall. hmmm sounds like a tough one.

you dont pay tax between ages 16-18.

Sneaking isn't an option, unfortunately.

I shall wait until Tuesday and then open conversation up again, if it doesn't work might as well just sod it and buy it :p
