pc or not to pc

You're right. Technologically, high-end PCs outstrip anything in the console world. This doesn't mean that they are better for gaming for the majority of gamers, however.

Unless you're a techy/enthusiast (read somebody on boards such as this ;)), you won't have a high end PC hooked up to your TV and be playing in the lounge. I play games to chill out, often split screen with friends. You can't do this with a PC without bringing it into the living room, and working out a control system for three or four people. It's a hassle. This isn't the way that everybody games, but the less "techy" and more casual the gamer, the less likely they will be to want to sit at their desk to play.

Likewise, a game does not need to be insanely deep to be good. Hardcore PC gamers will disagree but again, I play games to relax. I don't want to spend a half hour pondering whether levelling up in a certain way will impact upon my desire to be a morally good warrior-mage with scanty clothing and a slight paunch. Again, I imagine that this is how the majority of gamers play games, and this reflects in sales of more casual console games. It does not mean that the game is worse if it is not as deep. Uncharted is a shallow game, but what it does it does exceptionally. Bioshock is a shallow game, but with an exceptional storyline which is why it is the great game that it is. Red Dead Redemption ditches a lot of the RPG elements from other Rockstar games which is why it is the game it is.

You may disagree with me. I know that for some people there is nothing more satisfying than considering how to level up, or how to plan their empire on a strategy game and that's fine. For these people games are competitive, and they want to "be the best". Most of these people will game on the PC for the deeper.

In short, it's a completely subjective question. It depends on what you want to get out of games. However, just because a game is less deep, it neither means that it is worse, and nor does it mean that it's for "thick consolites" who can't see that the PC ROXOR.

...

consoles are gay

I will alter my stance if you mean using a PC solely for gaming, then I agree that consoles are a better route to take.

I, however, use my PC for a number of things apart from gaming, making the cost somewhat more justified. A perfectly decent gaming PC can be had for a moderate cost as well, no need for 580s if you stick to 1080p.

Yes indeed, but the OP is trying to decide if he should continue with a 'gaming' PC. The only gamers that still need PC's are RTS fans and MMO bods. The casual gamer has little excuse to dip into his pockets for the latest and greatest these days.. I am for the most part just a casual gamer. I don't ever MMO, but still occasionally enjoy an RTS, and still prefer mouse & keyboard over controller, so I still PC. But, there's nothing on the horizon out there that is telling me to start saving for the next gfx / cpu generation, as its not going to play Mame any better, nor will it launch Firefox for OcUK any quicker & My MP3's won't sound better either.. The need for upgrading only comes with the desire to game using the latest and greatest, but since these are leaving the equation, then the PC hardware industry needs to take note, before it gets pushed too far to the sidelines to ever make a comeback...

No-longer are PC games marketed to the masses as they use to be. You have to know about it and read about it yourself and go make an effort to download from a digital store, and you better hope it works ok otherwise you are up the creek.

Some people speaking sense at last:rolleyes: Over the next two years is it worth having a latest greatest gaming pc and the answer is definitely not.
Unless you are heavily in to your mmo's fps & rts games.

But even then the best rts game on pc is from nov 2006 company of heroes ( starcraft 2 is shallow resource war spam fest imo)

So for all we know there isn't even going to be an rts that will topple coh from it's perch in the next two years.

I play all types of games on my PC & i prefer to play them on my PC no matter what the type of game & i don't care if they are PC exclusive or not all that matters is the game a good one.

I got the G25, Mouse & KB, 360 wireless pad, Eyefinity, & also hooked up to the 50" plasma.
With the PC i get the best of everything & i got the consoles for the few games that i like that are not on the PC.

135 on Steam games & plus many more boxed.

Can you just put the disc in and enjoy simple and enjoyable games with friendly controls straight away on the PC? NO.

What is this 'disc' you speak of? :D My 100+ games on steam just boot when I double click them, can't get much easier than that.

And many of those games will run with console friendly controls straight away if you have an Xbox controller plugged in. I still prefer to use mouse and keyboard though, except for racing games and some platformers.

For some of us (like me) it's a case of having to have both.

I enjoy playing my PS3 as the quick bash games I play like Fifa and GT5 have to be played on the PS3. I do enjoy an adventure game as well though. However, I do agree, GT5 graphics are nothing like what was mooted.

However, as far as i'm personally concerned, nothing has ever been released on consoles that comes close to a good Total War game. Just a staggering experience imo. I also enjoy FSX and the whole thing of building your own FSX world using scenery add ons and planes. MS Flight should be out next year as well (though i'm not hopeful).

A bit like the horses for courses post earlier.

Ironically though, the same day I bought GT5, I bought a pool game on my iPad for 0.59p. No prizes for guessing what has been played most :p

People have failed to grasp what's happening in 2011/2012 imo.
There's a fantastic line up and most of them aren't going to be on pc and if they are tsome of them will be delayed and possibly not even out until 2012.

All that matters is the software in the here and now and next week surely ?
Let me break some stuff down with my opinion of best of genre currently and mostly exclusive to consoles if it's multi the pc version is a delayed release.

RPGS - consoles
Racing games - consoles
Action games - consoles
Fighting games - consoles
Sports games -consoles
Indie games - consoles
Other games (heavy rain etc) consoles

RTS - Pc
MMO- Pc
FPS- Pc

Now if you find mmo's and most rts games like watching paint dry (which a hec of a lot of people do) you'd be hard pushed to justify having an always up to date pc for just the occasional FPS and semi decent RTS.

An example of how bad the situation has gotten on pc is, a guy said he is buying assassins creed brotherhood for pc and cant wait well by the time it's out on pc I'll be able to buy ACB for probably £15-£20 for console and have a better optimized game and better controls.

Just a classic example of how even multiplatform games lag behind on pc in terms of price and release dates and make no sense to buy for pc unless it's a FPS.

My advice is sell up get a console and get a pc when half life 3 battlefield 3 etc are out.

All the beardy types will defend the pc until the cows come home but not everyone likes mmo's or total war style games in fact they are very boring to most people.

End of the day i'll get an up to date gaming rig again when half life 3 battlefield 3 hit probably around late 2012 maybe 2013.

the only games i prefer playing on consoles are

fighting games....a nice big screen where you and your opponent can both sit back and get a view of.

driving games....i wouldn't be playing these with a mouse and keyboard anyway, a joypad or steering wheel and the bigger screen just makes things better. ofcourse i do have my pc connected to the t.v too so when playing something like dirt it feels like im on a console anyway...wireless pad/wheel sat on a sofa.

*EDIT*

saying that,,,,last time i played street fighter it was on pc connected to the t.v with wireless pads. i guess it just really leaves driving games.

It's not about types of games it's about the actual games and the quality and fun of those games in the here and now and near future.

The best games of 2010 are not even on pc or are but are delayed or were delayed, and the best games of 2011 will not be on pc in 2011 either bar one or two like this year where we had starcraft 2 and bad company 2 being better on pc and that's about it.

Even dragon age 2 is going to be a console port losing the stuff that made it slightly better on pc in the first game.

I am not knocking pc at all I am knocking the software lineup and the delaying of the pc versions.
Why isn't red dead redemption even on pc yet ? :( it's a sad situation but my top 10 games of 2010 were not on pc.

One thing I do love about PC gaming even though sadly I do tend to be playing a lot of PS3 games at the moment that just won’t see the light of day on the PC.

It’s the option to control v sync etc.. I personally hate screen tearing, and the PS3 is well known for screen tear in games. Its something I find very distracting, and the PC you can control this and turn v sync on and tweak the game to maintain FPS and get a really smooth experience.

Another thing I do like about PC gaming is the controls. You can use gamepads (I use a PS3 DS3 pad easily enough), keyboard, mouse, steering wheels – heck you can even get head tracking units.

PC gaming has its advantages, I have a PS3 and a PC gaming rig and I use them both. Which do I prefer? Maybe PC gaming only due to the 10 + years I’ve put into PC gaming. I’ve had some great times with PC gaming, I do hope it continues. Consoles are just as much fun, I have room in my life for both a PC and a PS3.

how long goes Gran turismo 5 take to install on the ps3 again?
Keep in mind that most people still don't even know how to install a PC game,
its hard to follow on screen instructions that basicly equates to presisng NEXT?
not to mention the complexity of macros or keybinds or even patching the games or installing mods/addons/fixes.
most games auto patch what are you talking about? mods , addons are not needed and most fixes are just to change behavior to how some people prefer it like the "handling" fixes in a lot of racing games that cater to the sim crowd

He's right I can't.

Mostly because i haven't had a disk drive in my pc for like 6 months now since i broke it.

Fortunately on the pc you don't need disks though.

Who uses macros outside hardcore RTS or wow people?

Also yeah key binds is the same as changing controls on the console which you pretty much have to do on most games even if it's just stetting invert look, or changing buttons to be more comfortable.

I have a PS3, Wii and a gaming PC. They all have their place - some games are better or only available on PC, some games are better or only available on console. Depends on the game.

If I had to pick one only tho, it would be an Xbox or PS3.

All formats have their strengths and weaknesses and I am fortunate enough to be able to pick and choose from all of them. Not everyone has that luxury.

It's about popularity and profit from software and there are many more people with £200 consoles sat under their TV's than there are PC gamers who can afford to keep up spec to play the (few) latest titles.

The PC is struggling to hold it's own in this current market and I can't really see it getting any better.

I haven't upgraded my PC for awhile now but mostly I only use it for WoW or the occasional blast at GTL with wheel. Will I build new for Battlefield 3? Not sure I can be arsed.

Half-Life 3...possibly!

i want to play gran turismo 5 :( but apart from that (and maybe other ps3 exclusives i may like) theres no point in me getting a ps3 just for small ammount of games

Yea thats why I am downgrading to an old setup so I can still do all the things that you mention a pc can do.
A £30 old DDR1 bundle or old laptop can do all the things you mentioned.

The only reason imo people throw money at pc is because the games are so easy to pirate.
