i3 540 V's q6600

simple question i3 540 @ 3.7 (OC is estimate) V's q6600 G0 @ 3.1 witch is best.
Not witch is best for gaming or video or web walking witch is best all in.

The Q6600 with a decent overclock. More and more games are making use of more than 2 cores now, i personally have an i3 overclocked to 4Ghz, but that was a completely new build.

Ive come from a OCd Q6600 to an i3 @4.4ghz and tbh im loving it, much faster, Better for F@H. Loads Cooler too, altho i am watercooled.

You can overclock Q6600 more to 3.4Ghz if you want. That will give you 1Ghz overclock which is about 42% extra performance from Q6600 and this is brilliant.

i3 will be faster in two threaded applications. However it will struggle in games that make use of 3-4 threads against Q6600 .

Your wrong there.

Do a search and check comparisons.

Though if you get a good Q6600 that overclocks well then things become different.

My motherboard a limiting my q6600 OC to 3.1 stable. witch is way i was asking about the i3 because a Good 775 board and cooler to OC more like 3.8 would cost nearly as mush as a low cost i3 package would.

i3 will beat the Q6600 in everything.

I went from a Q6600 @ 3.466 to an i3 @ 4.0 and the i3 had better fps in every game I tried.

Plus they run considerably cooler, and use far less power.

Can't go wrong with the i3 tbh, it's newer tech and seems to handle any game that I've thrown at it on max settings @4.2GHz

OMG. i wish people would stop giving crap advice. not every chip is the same! you cant just expect 100% of chips to overclock to some set standard.

but this is intresting though, i didnt realise that the i3 beats the q6600 on most stuff and selling old stuff can offset the cost quite a bit!

I have a Q6600 that I run at 3.8Ghz stabily with very good air cooling but *very* few will do this. The average I would expect is ~3.4Ghz with decent voltages/temps.
4Ghz+ on an i3 should be faster than a 3.4Ghz Q6600 in most things that you seem to do but optimised SMP stuff I would take the quad core.
It's a shame that you can't access the members market yet to pick up a good second hand board P35/P45 board for around £40 as that would get the most out of your Q6600.

i had a MSI P35 platinum witch gave 3.6 stable but i distroyed the board with a bad bios flash i did fix it but it never been the same witch is way i now a low cost board witch is crap
