Hi All,
It looks like i will be starting a new job in london in the next few weeks, I need some help planning my costs so I can work out what rent I can afford.

My current question is, How much should i put aside for commuting via underground (zone 1,2,3 I think)?

Is there any other London specific costs i should be aware of?

Thanks in advance my new neighbors

Rick

Where will you be living, where will you be working.

Fairly useful bits of info to be able to help!

I'm going to be living in London from July so I'll keep an eye on this thread.

Oh and my mate lives in a flat on Old Street with 2 others above a sandwich shop for about £130 a week.

I work in the City. And let me tell you now... It isnt cheap.

Dont drive unless you feel you HAVE to. If the Congestion Charge doesnt spike you the price of parking will. So try to stick with public transport.

How much will it cost you. That all depends on how far you have to travel.

Rent...... Londoners are paying mortgage amounts to rent at the moment.

Where abouts in London are you moving to and where is your new place of work?

How much will you be taking home each month if you don't mind me asking?

I was taking about £1300

£600 rent
£100 travel (bus, much nicer than tube)
£100 bills, council tax
£50 or so petrol, we had free parking

Leaving £450 or so for general living, so was pretty comfortable tbh.

This was in a shared house of four, in Rotherhithe (I know, dull area! But it's pretty nice, quiet, cheap, and very convenient for London Bridge where I worked. We were living pretty much on the river too which is cool...)

I will be taking home about £2500, although i am still in final salary package negotiations.

As i say, i'm not sure where I will be living but I really want to live IN London rather than just travel in for work. I am young so i want to experience London properly.

I was planning to ditch my car as i don't think I will need it, perhaps get a motorbike at some point.

Can't help, but its relavent to my interests for when I come back to UK. How friendly is London to motorbikes? Would I have to waddle through congestion charge waiting lines or are there a "fast track/bus lanes" one for non charge paying, guess... hope motorbikes are exempt? Guessing I will be living somewhere within m25, but outside of what Londoners call London for cheaper rent.

It's ok, busy, but ok. In Westminster you have to pay to park your bike during weekday work hours (Soho etc). No congestion charge though.

It's not a toll booth system, there's a big C marking in the middle of the road when you go into the zone and cameras that take your license plate, you then have 24 hours to log onto to the website and pay the charge (or you can pre-pay).

Otherwise there are no queues apart from regular London traffic so you can dodge and weave between them to your hearts content.

Most central London boroughs don't charge for motorcycle parking but i believe Westminster have started doing so, although it's pretty cheap.

i work in holborn. But i spend £200 on train, £650 on one bed room flat, council steals £105, bills for house about £100+. I have about £300 left for food and everything else after all expenses. But i could rent a room nearly anywhere in london for about £700 including all bills, but then i would have to live in bed room and share the kitchen and bathroom with strangers.

You work in holborn, but where abouts do you live? How long is you commute?

I have been looking at some places in docklands which i understand is crazy expensive but nice.

I have also seen some two bed places around london for about 1300 which seems pretty decent when split with my mate who is going to move as well.
