Another slap for Russ

lol. at least ASA was doing its' job, would be good if they cracked down on a few others as well. too many smoke and mirrors in the world of hi-fi imo

Agreed. Gotta love the £200+ HDMI cables also, total snake oil...

unfortuneately people get suckered all the time. My friend got one for just under £100 when he bought his BDP, and i was like why? i had told him not too, he believed the sales guy - then we compared with the cheap £5 cables i had and he was furious

The sales guys often get quite a bit commission on cables, which is why they are so pushy about them... It is bad though, as these sales people are taking advantage of peoples lack of knowledge in order to line their own pockets.

Then if course you get some companies who just recase other companies products, then charging an extra £3000 for basically the same thing in a pretty box:

I can't really think of any other industry that could get away with this sort of **** and stay in business...

I came on here to post this thread and I see it has already been done. I was happy to read the article myself and see that some justice is being done on tackling these con artists. I'd like to see them go further with products like this. I cringed when my brother told me he spent £35 on a HDMI cable from a well known electrical store.

I actually have bigger issue with the magazines that say "Detail, dynamics and clarity of sound are vastly improved" ..... because these people have more influence to the less well informed....

"those who own high-end components costing £2000 upwards should seriously consider this PowerKord lead."

That's rubbish, as the higher end gear has less opportunity to improve than cheaper kit, as the law of diminishing returned kicks in.... I know, I have kit costing over 2k !!!!!!
There are no "vast improvements" left.... I wish there was.

No to be honest I would happily pay 200 quid for that lead..... If it made a vast improvement.... So far mains leads have done next to diddlie squat on my electronics.....

Cards on the table, I do actually own some RA power strips, the nice blue ones with the alloy housings....
I bought them because I was going out to Italy to live for a couple of years, and it was away of using UK kit and mains leads with a Euro fly lead plugged into the block. Plus they offer some surge protection, power in Italy is a bit dodgy... and they are very robust and well made.
Anyway they were half price in sale.

Did my system sound "vastly better" ???? funny can't say I noticed.... Thankfully it all survived the Italian experience and all still works fine back in the UK :)

I should have coarse try with and with out the power blocks and lead.... just to prove a point...... :D One day when I'm feeling bored..... hmm might lead to an eBay selling opportunity ;)

Ooh, just saw this, been on hols for 3 weeks

The problem is the ASA is limited in what it can do, they are actually very good at looking at the evidence base, but their hands are tied. For real action, you need trading standards, and what they do depends on the number of complaints and how effective your local trading standards is, and to be honest, compared to what goes on in the likes of people promoting quack healthcare, hi-fi isn't really a priority! Plus, as I think others have said, it's rare for manufacturers to claim anything, it's usually just the magazines.
