Hi,

I'll be upgrading my 4400+ and 2GB to a 2600K and 8GB but will be using my existing 8800GTS until I have the funds for an upgrade on the graphics card. I game on a 19 inch 1280x1024. Will I be able to catch up and play games like GTA 4, Bioshock 2, Mass Effect 2 and whatever else I've missed out on?

Thanks :)

sell the gts and get a second hand card as a stop gap dude, the 8 series gtx's or ultras go for dirt cheap these days and those games will be playable at your res

Is it an 8800GTS 512MB??

If so you should be still fine for many modern games.

I have an overclocked HD4830 512MB and it still runs most games fine and these include Bioshock 2 and Mass Effect 2. I use a 20" monitor and run games at 1680X1050 or 1440X900.

Even my HD3870 512MB in my other computer would be fine at 1280X1024. The HD3870 512MB is around the same speed as a 8800GTS 640MB IIRC.

TBH,until a game is causing you issues I would not get a new card unless you see a good deal on a new one somewhere.

Bioshock 2 and Mass Effect 2 aren't that demanding. My laptop with 8600GT handles them both fine at 1440x900. GTA4 needs a lot more kick.

Also,a Core i7 2600K and 8GB of RAM will not show much improvement in games AFAIK over a Core i5 2500K or a Core i5 2400 and 4GB of RAM. The money saved could be put towards a better graphics card.

To be honest my bro's core 2 duo and 8800GT runs gta 4 just about playable whereas my existing system grinds to a halt with single figure framerate after about 10 mins of play indicating the CPU to be the bottleneck.

I have the EVGA 8800 GTS KO ACS3 edition with 640MB of RAM. Having looked at the box, I noticed I forgot all about the 90 days step up program lol.

Think you missed the step up boat :)

GTA4 is CPU and Vid RAM limited. Was playing it today, it looked like arse and used 900MB of my cards 1GB to get to half draw distance. It's a really bad port.

i tryed gta4 with 2.4ghz q6600 4gb ram and a 1gb 250gts which should be around the 8800 in terms of speed?

was getting 32fps in streets 32-50ish indoors/cutscenes on med/high settings , still playable imo , the gpu was at 100% load so mabe ur card will hv some room if u overclock it? who knows

1680x1050 120hz settings

card at recommended ingame settings etc

Yeah, GTA4 will struggle, though only because it's a shoddy port. The others will run smoothly on medium settings I reckon.

Generally speaking if it's a console port you'll be alright, those are 5+ year old machines they were designed to run on afterall! :p

I run an 8800gts 640Mb on a 19" wide screen and I can play Mass Effect 2 at 1400x900 full settings no probs

That's to be expected at a low res, high res with that card is definitley going to alter your gaming experience negatively.

There's a fella on MM which is selling a 280GTX XXX edition for £78, I was going to get it but then realized it's beastily big, and wouldn't fit in my SG05. :)

I'm not of a fan of the game, but I disagree. It's not a bad port. Take a look at the settings the 360 version uses (they're far far lower than an average PC runs at) and I believe only 30FPS which does dip down to 20.

It's not the best port ever, but consider the amount it's running at once. It's also created with at LEAST tri-core CPU's in mind.

To give you an idea, my SB 2500 K + GTX 480 run the game beautifully at the highest possible settings, and with AA / AF.

Before hand, on my Q6600 (didn't try it with my old 4850 512MB) I couldn't max out the draw distances and traffic.

Isn't what is low res and high res subjective?
To me moving up from 1024x768 to 1440x900 is high res, or at leas a higher res.

You think I should get a better card to up the res a bit?

512MB 8800GTS will be fine at 1280x type resolutions in those games, the only one as mentioned above that might struggle is GTA4 and probably metro 2033 if you tried that, a few games you'd have to turn details down but most will still play on high or mostly high settings at that res.

I have a GTX260m in my laptop (which in reality is basically a 9800GT 1Gig) and it still handles most stuff at 1680x1050 with high settings and 4x AA, very few games I have to turn the details down.

The game itself runs fine, it's just massively VRAM dependent. They use the VRAM to cache textures and geometry, my 1GB 4890 struggles purely on memory, my 6950 is fine because it has 2GB. The graphics engine is completely unoptimised on PC's and has been brute forced.
